You don't need to have webcal (URL handler for web calendars), but you do need evolution-data-server as evolution-2.0 can't run without it. All of the evolution data is handled by evolution-data-server now. This allows other gnome apps to access the data.

Hi all,
I have not used Gnome in quite a while. Is Spacial Nautilus still the default behavior?

Thanks

My fstab has the option "user" and i can't umount the camera...

Code:
/dev/sda1               /mnt/photos     auto            noauto,user,umask=002  0 0

EDIT: just replace user by users and it works :D

Yes, but there is now a preferences checkbox for it so you don't have to go into gconf.

Double click doesn't work here. It must be programmed to run evolution-1.4 and not evolution-2.0 command. Maybe someone know where to configure this, if configurable.

It looks like no one else had this problem. But just in case, I figured out a fix.

I noticed this problem too... you probably need to emerge that particular package without distcc... this seemed to fix it for me.

FEATURES="-distcc" MAKEOPTS="-j1" emerge libbonobo

1. when i start gok it monits me sth like that [it's my translation, so it might not be perfect:

Quote:
gok is being used in "core pointer" mode.
...
we suggest you to configure your input device as "extended"

how to do that?

2. does yours metacity work with xcompmgr properly?

yes it is. As of gnome 2.8 one may change the default behavior from nautilus preferences.

Well I just installed Gnome 2.8. A number of problems at the start. Gdesklets is a pain. It seems to cause a lot of problems. I upgraded to .30 meaning I had to upgrade to versions of pyorbit and gnome-python not in portage.

Multitail would make the entire system hang everytime it updated a with a new entry. Dunno why. Other problems existed to, so I gave up on Gdesklets. They are a bunch of buggy pieces of crap anyways. Good looking pieces of crap but nonetheless.

I had other problems too. I had to blow out the config (.gconf* .gnome*) files repeatedly and I had a lot of hangs when changing themes and multimedia settings (seem to have stopped now).

One odd thing is that fonts seem bigger. On the smallest font size (8) with the default fonts now. I know that the monospace font is bigger because I used to run terminal at 90x50 in a smaller window than I have for 80x45 right now.

Weird. What is up with that? It didn't do that when I first started playing with it, but now that it seems to have stabilized this is what I get.

Anyone have any ideas what is up with the fonts?

Also does anyone know a trick to get a program to not display in the window list? I want to use torsmo but I don't want it to be listed.

Overall, mixed feelings. I don't see any real improvements except Evolution 2.0 which probably could have been installed without Gnome 2.8 no?

because of various problems I did a fresh gentoo-install with gnome-2.8 and voila double click at a date opens evolution-2.0

How did you get it to emerge 2.8?

When i do an emerge gnome, it only offers gnome-base/gnome-2.6.2-r1. I've already done emerge --sync (this is a fresh install of gentoo from stage 1)

Also, if I try to emerge it directly I get the following error

Code:

gentoo root # emerge gnome-2.8
Calculating dependencies

!!! Problem in gnome-base/gnome-2.8 dependencies.
!!! "Specific key requires an operator (gnome-base/gnome-2.8) (try adding an '=')" exceptions

but "emerge search gnome-2.8" comes up empty

:?

Unless you're using ~x86 in your make.conf you'll have to do some trickery.

Easy (improper) way:
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge -pv gnome

I'd recommend this way if you don't use emerge -u world. Once gnome 2.8 hits the stable arch though, you could resume using emerge -u world, since it won't downgrade the packages.

Difficult (proper) way:
add all the packages in the gnome.ebuild to /etc/portage/package.keywords as mentioned here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1652895#1652895

I'd recommend this way if you do use emerge -u world. You can take the packages out of package.keywords after gnome 2.8 hits stable arch.

Yeah, I have been using it sense it was in ~x86 and haven't had much problem (most problems were caused by user error  ). Seems pretty dang stable to me.
