I use a image viewer called xnview. I haven't used it in a while but when I tried to use it today to convert an image to a png it didn't work. When I try starting it from a terminal window it crashes with this error:
Code:

X Error of failed request:  BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request:  45 (X_OpenFont)
Serial number of failed request:  1271
Current serial number in output stream:  1436

Last time I used xnview was when I still had xfree installed. I'm thinking this may be related to using xorg but I'm not sure. There isn't really anything else that I changed that might affect xnview.

Just wanted to say, that it works here without problems
(or at least it starts and displays images).

X.org Version 6.8.0
XnView Version 1.68

Maybe a font problem ? Don't know, but I would try to rename ~/.xnviewrc,
to see if it is a configuration issue.

It looks like a font problem but I don't know why it could be happening. No other applications have any problems with fonts. This is really annoying.

Got the list of fonts that xnview uses and I have all of them installed and working (in xfontsel). Really starting to annoy me.

And same problem for me, i believe the problem appeared with me after upgrading from Xorg 6.7 to 6.8-r1.
I tried also v.1.5 and 1.68.1, but with same problem.

I can run the program and i get the toolbar/menu, but after clicking Open on XnView it crashes.
nview still works fine from commandline.

No help here either http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=1014

Looking in other threads here in gentoo forums, i found some alternatives like gqview,
gthumb for gnome users and showimg for kde users. Still i want use XnView...

Running happily Fluxbox

Hi all,

I've got the same problem, with running xorg-x11 6.8-r1.
Have anyone a solution for this?

Also in case you havn't noticed, if you use some other (non fixed ) font in your terminal, it may be gone as well.

Take a look at this. Look at the last comment, it provides workaround.

That's what solved the problem for me.

Not yet... For people watching this issue, look at bugs 140104 and 140262.

But I guess this will soon be fixed.

I'd happily remove xnview from portage, it sucks w/r to security, it's a binary blob and there are free programs that can do the same. So... I'll be fixing it today (CET timezone).

I said that before people start posting about "can't emerge xnview because fonts are not stable".

XnView is the better free (as beer) viewer/converter for Windows. For Linux, it still has support for dozens (or hundreds?) of image formats. Unfortunately, Linux version does not receive the same attention as windows version.

If you know a free Linux program that has support for so many formats (not gimp, because gimp is a full editor, not just a viewer), tell us. (but don't remove xnview from portage)

For me gqview is more than enought. And about removal of xnview: won't happen any time soon :)

Does not solve the problem for me (Xorg 7.0). Still ...

Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont)

Strange, because I have no problems since those two fonts were installed.

I'm running latest stable system.
