PostPosted: Tue Aug 31, 2004 2:06 pm    Post subject: Simple apache permission problem Reply with quote

Currently: http://aeon.servequake.com has subdirectories with files in those subdirectories. For some reason even though all the permissions are set to read access for owner group and others (755) the files are only accessable if the full path to the file is specified.

Eg: http://aeon.servequake.com/mda/picture.jpg

I would like it so that /mda/ can be browsed without having to specify a file first. The owner of the folder is root.

As ive said, im sure this is something very simple to fix but i cant make out what it is.

The current permission error is:

Code:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /mda/ on this server.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apache/2.0.48 (Gentoo/Linux) Server at aeon.servequake.com Port 80

Any help greatly appreciated!! :)

Hi

You need the apache directive 'Options Indexes'.

Uncomment the line in your apache config:
Code:
LoadModule autoindex_module modules/mod_autoindex.so

and in the vhost section enter
Code:
Options Indexes

bye

Unfortunately im still having the same problems. If you still happen to be around any chance you can throw some more ideas at me? (by the way, the first line was already uncommented.. all i did was add the option indexes part)

Thanks

You need execute permissions on the directory as well -- do you have those?

You could try to replace the 'Options Indexes' with this
Code:
<Directory "/var/www/localhost/htdocs/mda">
   Options Indexes
   Allow from all
</Directory>

I think your snippet of code did it.

THanks to all those who helped.. i tried everything suggested in the order it came and the piece of code that seemed to do the trick is here incase anyone has this problem again and needs confirmation that it works!

Code:
<Directory "/var/www/localhost/htdocs/mda">
   Options Indexes
   Allow from all
</Directory>

Another solution:
In /etc/apache2/conf/commonapache2.conf change
Code:
Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
to
Code:
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, as they say.
