I have xfree 4.2.1 installed, and I am under the impression that this also gives me xft2 and latest fontconfig? I ask this because on portage there is a separate xft 2.0 ebuild which I do not have installed, and did not know if I needed it.
On another note, is it possible to get gtk1 applications to take advantage of xft2 and aa? Thanks

XFree86 4.2.1 includes xft 1.0. If you want xft 2.0 for gnome then you will have to emerge it (see the gnome-2.1.1 mask in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask...you will find xft and other stuff). There is a program to get gtk1 apps to use AA...gdkxft...it's masked, and I've yet to get it compile....supposedly it crashes a lot of things from time to time, but I wouldn't know as I don't have it yet
