HOWTO: Use xrandr with ATI

This may be buried in the ATI Radeon sticky but more than 60 pages is a lot to sort through. . .

Simply, the xrandr command allows you to change the root window size, not the same as using <Ctrl> + <Alt> + <+> which changes the screen resolution but not the desktop size, allowing the desktop to be "scrolled" with the mouse.

If you have an ATI Radeon card and are using the driver fglrx you may get the following when you try the xrandr command.

Code:
# xrandr
Xlib:  extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0"

To enable xrandr you need to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file (as root) so it looks like this (remove a # if it is at the front of the line).

Code:
Option    "omit xfree86-dga"   # don't initialise the DGA extension

Save the file and restart the X server (<Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Backspace>). Now the resolution can be changed with xrandr.

What exactly is the message you get? When do you see it? I don't think that I can help but maybe someone else can.

The reason might be the limited functionality of FGLRX driver. I.e. rotation is propably not supported (yet).

Do the latest ati-drivers support xrandr rotation yet? I'm running 8.18.8-r1, as 8.19.10 doesn't build the DRM module properly, and they don't seem to support rotation.

When I run xrandr, normal is the only rotation listed as possible.

Has anyone actually got rotation to work with the ati-drivers? I've read about people getting it running under nVidia, but that isn't much help...

Thanks.

Yes, it works under nvidia, but no, it doesn't work with ATI.
