I just finished my first install of Gentoo but my eth0 refuses to come up. it says no such device on bootup. I went back and compiled the SMC Etherpower II driver into the kernel but it still does the same thing.

I rebboted off the 1.4 cd and ran net-setup eth0. "lsmod" lists osst and cpqarray as only modules loaded (neither sounds like SMC) ethernet works fine off cd - why can't I get it to recognize the device?

My card is: SMC 9432tx (Etherpower II)

Any possibility that /boot was not mounted when you copied the new kernel onto it?

You are talking to a true n00b. How can I be sure? I was not running off the cd when I recompiled. When I ls -l the /boot directory it says that bzImage is Nov 8 21:34 which was last night when I recompiled. Did I do something wrong?

One thing that is a bit confusing for people not accustomed to Unix filesystems is that mount points are directories. You can tell which filesystems are mounted by typing "mount". If /boot is not listed, then it's unmounted, but you can still copy things to the /boot directory, which is on the / (root) filesystem.

I would try this:
Code:
# mount /boot
# cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot
# umount /boot
# shutdown -r now

Now I'm off to browse the forums to find out the least painless way to install KDE

Thanks very much (I've searched for hours looking for an answer!)
