I have finally got my system running pretty well. Alsa works well and Nvidia works OK (performance seems good, but I am getting glxgears scores that are in the mid 700's, which seems pretty slow, but not a big deal since UT plays very nice). I am using xdm and openbox, because I want a fast lightweight system.
My first question is: What would be a good graphical file manager that wouldn't require Gnome or KDE?
My second question is: What are good applications (graphical preferably) to play dvd's and burn cd-r's?
I would like to stay within the portage tree.
Many thanks! _________________ Is the sky really falling??? |

I've heard good things about rox and gentoo (gentoo the filemanager, not the distro) both are in portage. as for the DVD playing, Xine is GUI and in portage, mplayer is also in portage, it has a gui but you need to specify -gui to get it.
for cd burning, i'm not sure which ones will work without KDE or Gnome. but theres tons of threads in these forums that recommend cd-burning software, just do a search |

I hope you're not implying that you haven't heard good things about gentoo the distro.

Don't forget ogle (it's on the portage tree) when speaking about DVD players!!
For the cd-burning question, I'd advise x-cdroast (don't know of it's dependencies though...) but gcombust is definetlly out of the question! |
