right now it is only one computer, and it's named "section9", from ghost in the shell.. before that it was for a few years named lv-426 from the alien movies, and not long ago it was called britneysleftnipple.. that's an all time favorite ,)

I also have an old PII 233 that's not being used.. it's called "bertha".

speaking of easy to ping computers. at our computer club at school we have a box running openbsd that's named rorschach.. It took me quite a while to find that one.. had to do a 'ypcat hosts' everytime to see the spelling =)

Once my laptop was Asmodean and my desktop Semirhage, named after two of the forsaken (characters from "the wheel of time" series of books by Jordan). Now the laptop's called Animebox (guess why...) but I'm seriously considering another change of name to bring back the "they're related one to another" idea. I've got to think about it, though, it's a serious matter. No joking.

I only have one machine right now, which I named ecko, after a t-shirt I was wearing when I installed Gentoo on it.

When/If I get more computers, I think I'll name them after rollercoaster rides, like Medusa, Viper, or my favorite, Nitro.

I have 40 boxs at the moment in a cluster and was going to name them after the (U.S.) States but then I decided that was kind of offensive to the Navy ships... Not to mention that when I got another dozen boxes I'd be done with even the pseudo-states (e.g. Puerto Rico) and then SOL... so I did countries, starting with the Carribean islands (independant ones). The first box is Guadeloupe - no real reason why.

When I finally felt that I was all comfy with my Gentoo installation I already knew what to name it. My subconcious had prepared a name for it:
Caerbannog

Yes... It is Monty pyhons quest for the holy grail, and you know it! :)

I've been using LoTR-style names from waaay before the movies. So, I have:

lorien - laptop
gondor - Athlon desktop
anduin - K6II-450 desktop
MrSilly - Sparc 10 & Compaq laptop

Yeah, I know, two systems with the same name... Should be really exciting for anyone who manages to break into my home lan, particularly as one of them is running NetBSD.

People like you worry me... names from LotR books not movies, a riker avatar, username "dontremember," two pcs with the same name: mrsilly, and you're from Oklahoma of all places (I've met people online from most every other state, but never Oklahoma.) and... NetBSD. That's just all very odd, and it's the sort of oddness that would appear to come naturally; people who try to be deliberately weird are generally weirder in more extreme, somewhat cheezy ways.

Ok I'll stop now.

Actually, one MrSilly isn't a PC.
Quote:
MrSilly - Sparc 10 & Compaq laptop

It's a dual-75MHz-cpu Sparc 10. The principal reason for not running Gentoo on it is that when I set it up, there wasn't a reasonably recent Linux kernel that supported SMP on Sparc32. Plus the fact that it would have taken rather a long time to bootstrap with its original, single, 40MHz cpu... FreeBSD doesn't do Sparc, OpenBSD didn't at the time, and I think the only other option was Slowlaris...

Oh, by the way, I'm not from Oklahoma, I just happen to be living there.

My last name is Monaghan, so I named my two computers;

  • Ballybay
  • Emyvale

which are towns in Ireland near Monaghan.

I always liked the name Cluster FOC for a cluster. FOC: Farm of Computers. You would need names for the computers, but there are all sorts of funny farm names you could come up with.

It can be.
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition wrote:
personal computer
n. Abbr. PC
A computer built around a microprocessor for use by an individual, as in an office or at home or school.

Point is, the term PC isn't x86 specific unless required by the context e.g. PC vs Mac.

I made up some names... zion is a nickname I used to use but when that dump movie matrix released, a lot of guys started to use that nick (actually its some "holy land" in the bible or something...) so I switched to the japanese romaji writing of it, "zaiyon", now I call my workstation by that name.
paron is a name I just made up too, wonder what that'll mean...

zion - workstation
paron-01 - router
paron-02 - Server(=Fileserver,Webserver,Leechserver,Mailserver,IRC-Server,FTP-Server,LDAP-Server etc.)
