I do not exactly name my computers, but I do name the kernels that run on them. Interesting part is, I did not start naming my kernels until a Gentoo friend of mine did. At the time, I had everything working except a few details like wireless and full touchpad functionality. I found out that my friend owns an Inspiron 1720 laptop (very similar to the Vostro 1700 I have), so I decided to have him document the changes to the kernel he made in order to get full functionality from the hardware. His kernel was named the "Hannah" kernel (yes, the one in my sig). Since my kernel was based on his, I decided to call mine a Hannah kernel since that is really what it is. (I had to make some changes to the .config since some devices are different.) All that was worth it - I joined him in showing off Gentoo in regular use. (I really like the "iPod-style" scrolling he showed me how to set up.)
Later, when I made custom kernels for my other machines, I named the one for my workstation "Allison" (named after a friend of mine who really likes to work with me), the one for my server "Lauren" (named after a friend of mine who works very hard), and the one for my older laptop "Eugenia" (named after a friend of mine who is very social and outgoing - works because that laptop is intended to be used as a mobile server). _________________

Of course, once the compile finishes, the executables are exported from the sandbox and (by default) added to the world profile. |

the first computer i ever bought, a used compaq armada m700 laptop (may 2004), i named alpha-sys.
the second one i got, a new gateway m680x (august 2005) which i still use today, i named beta-sys.
the next laptop i get will probably be gamma-sys, but i think i'll go with a different naming scheme if i get a desktop. _________________ "You cheese-eating...sideways monkeys!" -Jeremy Clarkson |

Circular scrolling so you can continue to move your finger in a circle on the touchpad instead of up-down, up-down, up-down... to scroll in a window. |

Oh I now how the ipods work, listening to music on one right now, but I am curious how this is emulated in linux on a touchpad.

My desktop was Yoshi (my dad had Mario and Luigi)
My laptop is just Tux, though.

I don't know the specifics, but my friend said that the DSP in a capacitive touchpad is actually quite advanced and very programmable. He said that by uploading a new firmware to it, new features can be added. (According to lsusb, the DSP in my particular computer is a Broadcom.) _________________

I used to just use random names (dopefish, cthulhu, firefly, slime, brick, lizard, pppowerbook, tarzan......)
But from now on I'm using alcohol names. My newest computer glows green, so I call it midori. |

My home computer is simply named quadbox. Lame
But all our servers at work are named after characters from Seinfeld and Futurama. _________________
