I want to upgrade the disc system in my Ultra 80. My questions are:

1. Are there current generation scsi controllers that will work in my u80? (320 or is 160 more likely)
2. If there are, do I need to be careful about which brand/size/something else hard discs I attach to them?
3. Can I boot from a HD that is connected through an expansion card? if not can I just put /boot on one of the original discs and have everything else on the new disc?

I guess that's it. Thanks for your help folks.

Cut and pasted from the Sun Blade FAQ site (google for sun blade faq)

Quote:
These should all work:

Antares PCI SCSI-U2WL 80 MB/s LVD SCSI 64-bit PCI
Antares PCI SCSI-2U2WL dual 80 MB/s LVD SCSI 64-bit PCI
Antares PCI SCSI-2U3WL dual 160 MB/s LVD SCSI 64-bit PCI
Asus SC875 40 MB/s UW SCSI 32-bit PCI

We're using the Asus card ourselves but it's quite hard to get
as it's not produced any more. Some other ncr/sym53c875 based
cards should work too (but not Tekram?).

Also, Intraserver has LVD host adapters that are supported under
SPARC Solaris.

Hi. There IS help: Just buy the DawiControl DC-2976UW SCSI Controller. For just about EUR 130,-- you'll get a perfect solution for connecting any SCSI device to your Blade100. The controller is based on a Symbios Logic Chipset (53C875), so the Blade recognizes this PCI device as a "native" one (Sun's own Swift Controller has got exactly the same Chipset, as far as I know). So, just plug it in, connect any SCSI device externally - and that's it. I currently have a DAT drive, a jaz drive, a SCSI-CDRW, a SCSI-DVD and a SCSI Hard Disk connected. This is the perfect solution for all my needs.

The Tekram DC-390F is a Symbios 53C875-based card that provides Ultra-Wide scsi and is natively supported by Solaris. I've used them in both my Ultra 5 and sunblade 100 systems.

Just about any scsi card will work in linux, just not for booting.

Bootable cards have to match what sun provides. I bought a symbios card which I thought would work but doesn't.

If you put /boot on a regular drive on the internal controller, just about any type of secondary card should come up under linux provided you have the driver compiled in the kernel.

Awesome. Thanks. I've found a few other options on my own too.

I want to maintain solaris booting capability so my options are limited to sun supported hardware. I'll probably get one of the sun ultra 320 cards and an external storedge enclosure for the discs. The prices are too high for my budget right now but in a few months I should be able to do this.

Thanks.
