Ok, so here's my problem: (not sure where to start)
The liveCD has a ton of modules, so I popped that one in and typed modprobe -a \* (or something like that) and it seemed to load about a million modules. I setup my first card (the generic one) and then when I tried ifconfig eth1, it says the device is not available. So, I rebooted back to my normal linux installation and looked at the PCI view in KDE and it says I have two ethernet controller cards, one RealTech and one VIA technologies.
Here is the pcitweak listing of the two cards:
PCI: 00:12:0: chip 1106,3043 card 1186,1400 rev 06 class 02,00,00 hdr 00
PCI: 00:13:0: chip 10ec,8139 card 10ec,8139 rev 10 class 02,00,00 hdr 00
I recompiled my kernel (hoping the liveCD has trouble) with the 8130too and via-rhine modules compiled directly into the kernel (modules always mess me up for some reason) and then recompiled and rebooted. I noticed I still don't have an eth1.
I've never setup two nic's in linux before, and am afraid I'm doing something wrong. Am I? I think the card is OK... I can retest it on a windows machine...
Has anyone ever done something simmilar to what I'm trying to do? Am I configuring the kernel wrong? The only thing left I can think to do is recompile the kernel with the 8139 as a module and alias it to eth1 (horrible hack if it works) which is what I'm going to try now.
I heard somewhere also on this forum that the DLink card uses the 8139too driver also. Is this true? All my google searches turned up with using the via-rhine driver... The PCI listing should say Realtech or 8139 for the chiptype, but it says 1400. I don't get it... ??? |

I have a D-Link DFE-530TX card. It seems to need both the module 8319too.o and mii.o.the output from pci-tweak is: Quote: | PCI: 00:0b:0: chip 10ec,8139 card 1186,1301 rev 10 class 02,00,00 hdr 00 | I've heard that new D-Link cards use the module 8319cp.o. Did you see the modules for the network cards listed when you ran lsmod from the live cd?

The first one you listed (PCI: 00:12:0: chip 1106,3043 card 1186,1400 rev 06 class 02,00,00 hdr 00) is a Via card (1106 is the PCI vendor id for via). The second one (PCI: 00:13:0: chip 10ec,8139 card 10ec,8139 rev 10 class 02,00,00 hdr 00) is the D-Link adapter. _________________ Robert |

the 8139cp driver doesn't work for either card, so I'm going to assume it's an OLD card
I don't know what mii.o is, so maybe I'll try that. Thanks. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Something tells me that I have a card that is severly antiquated, and there is possibly no driver for. I got the card out of one of my old Pentium 1-200MHz machines.
it would do me no good to look at lsmod, because even on the livecd, I could not get the card to work. I just recompiled the kernel with the mii, 8139too, and via-rhine as modules instead of static, so possibly that will make the difference. |
