i installed the newest gentooo and emerged xorg-x11 and gnome and got gnome running fine.. but whenever i log out everything locks up (must be a hard lockup cuz nothing responds.... not even ctrl-alt-backspace) and i have to shut off my computer every time (i HATE doing that)... I read a couple forum topics about this but never came across a solution. I am a complete n00b so if anyone could help me out that would be good lol... using metalog for logging but dont knwo what log files to post here so if anyone needs em to help me out ill put em up
using gentoo-dev-sources... 2.6.8-gentoo-r1 i believe
thanks!

I have the same problem over here. (same configuration) There are no special errors in the Xorg.0.log file, neither in /var/log/messages. I'll look further on the forums for some similar problems.

When I tried the exit the windowmanager, X11 hangs, but this time I am still able to swith to vt1 so I could kill startx. I'll ty to find out what this all means.

I had that problem but it went away when I changed kernel versions. I was using KDM rather than GDM, but I'm pretty sure that the problem was with X not finding a resource free. I still don't know what really caused it. Upgrade if you're feeling adventurous.

I have a similar problem here. Usually I run mm-sources, but recently I built a gentoo-dev-sources kernel to give it a try. I'm using Gnome 2.6.2 and xorg.

This is what happens:

1. With xdm in my startup sequence, gdm and Gnome both start fine, but when I log out of the session, my screen goes blank and the keyboard dies on me. Only a hard reset gets me out of this.

2. Again with xdm in my startup sequence, if I immediately go to shut down or reboot the computer without logging in as a user, the computer does so.

3. If I take xdm out of the startup sequence so that I start in console mode, and use startx to start Gnome, I can start and stop Gnome without any problems.

4. If I start in console mode, manually start xdm, and log in as a user, then my computer hangs on logout again.

My xorg log does not give me any error messages or hints as to what's going on.

I would love to hear any suggestions.

Hi wilburpan, I have exactly the same problem on my home machine.
I've noticed something strange. When I press ctrl_alt_backspace before logging out. The x-server stops and does not restart. I get the text console instead. At that time there is still a gnome-keyring-deamon process running. Maybe this has something to do with the problem?

I have the same problem, only that it doesn't happen every time. It is more or less random. The kind of random that happens very often. Once I tried to log in from another machine to see why it crashed but that didn't work. The other time I was already logged in, but that didn't work either. The whole machine was dead. Looks like the crash involves kernel itself. I use 4.3.0-r6 and 2.6.7. I have already upgraded my kernel various times in past. Haven't yet tried out 2.6.8.1.
