When i run ut2003 the sound is ok but when my cpu is maxed (2 or 3 bots near me) the sound is decreasing in quality(sounds like crap).
And i have tried al sound options in ut2003 but nothing fixed it :( , kmix is at 70% and i only have this problem with gen2( redhat mandrake did not have this problem)
I am using alsa and i have the cmipci driver, any idea?

in my home directory I have .openalrc with a single line of text
(define devices '(emu10k1))

Also, installing the patches really improved performance for me. Although I had to install them manually cause the updater couldn't find my install even though it was installed in the default directory.

I had the same issue with the update. Intead of update run loki_update. That worked on my box to get the patch. After the patch installed the regular update file works now :)

Thanks for the fast response, the patches did really help to improve my framerate(from 50 to 60) :)
But now i get this error while compiling openal:

root@192 distfiles # emerge openal
Calculating dependencies ...done!

>>> md5 ;-) openal-20020127.tar.gz

Vorbis support should be in there i think, any ideas?

Ok installed openal(ebuild was fixed) and sdl-mixer but the sound is still crappy:

This are the ut2003.ini settings(i turned on precache ot see if that helped the rest is standard, )
Again the sound was great with mandrake 9 suse 8 and RH8 so this is clearly a gentoo only problem(something with alsa i think).

[ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem]
UseEAX=True
Use3DSound=True
UseDefaultDriver=True
CompatibilityMode=True
UsePrecache=True

I have the same problem, with my SBlive, alsa-0.9_rc6, esd stopped, and a .openalrc file which contains only:
Code:
(define devices '(emu10k1))

I really don't know what I could try now. Did you find a solution you could share ?

Thanks.

After re-reading my post, I've seen that the only thing I hadn't tried yet to modify was the openal device. Switching to
Code:
(define devices '(sdl))

did the trick :lol:

Sorry for having disturbed this old sleeping thread.
