Hey, what's the equivelant to ScanDisk on linux?.. my gentoo crashed when starting gdm for some reason and when I run vim I get loads of errors with vim-info and my XF86Config file is currupt, other files might be currupt to.. so I really need to scan disk the system.

Actually, in your case, I'd just reinstall the whole XF86 structure. It'd be a lot easier than trying to fix everything, and your screwed if anything's corrupted, anyway.

But..

Like vers_iq said, it's fsck. Do a 'man fsck', and be enlightened.
Just in case you don't have man, it's "fsck /dev/*", or "e2fsck /dev/*" if you have ext2. Not sure if there's a different procedure for ext3 or reiser.

Since the question's been answered, I'm locking this thread before it gets any warmer in here. For future reference, it is a good idea to check out documentation, FAQs and do a search (here and on google) before asking a question - though most people here don't object to helping a n00b out.
