I noticed that vixie-cron wasnt in my startup, so I ran it in a shell in Xwindows. System locked hard, reproducable.

Is there a reason cron would lock the system on a sunblade 150 in X?

What kernel? And what logger? If you are running kernel-2.6.7, metalog seems like a bad idea;
one suggestion was sysklogd, and it works fine for me.

That said, if you want to run vixie-cron, a better way would be to be
rc-update add vixie-cron default,
or, for testing,
/etc/init.d/vixie-cron start

Beyond that, or if I am misunderstanding your question, I have no information. I don't know why it should lock your system,
if it still does after experimentation as just noted.
