consolefonts, consoletrans, keymaps. How does the sys work?

Hi,

I have been searching the forums, and the web, looking for papers, explaining how text is displayed on the screen, specifically the console.

Why is consoletrans needed?
How does unicode work?
Do all the keymaps have the EuroSign? (I suppose not)
Localization...
etc...

Please help me find anything that will help me understand 'how the system works'.
