MS Windows has just thrown a little wobbly, not letting me even boot into it at the moment, but of course my gentoo system still going like the day I installed it... Last time this happened I had to reformat everything (including linux partitions because windows felt an overpowering need to screw with everything)
Anywayz I was wondering if anyone can think of a way to keep windows controlled without losing my other partitions on the same drive...?
Win ME (hda1 - slightly stuffed hehe)
Gentoo / (hda5)
Gentoo /boot (hda6)
Will I have to reformat the lot again?  |

no just reformat hda1 during reinstall of winMe. The bootloader will be overwritten so you will have to boot with your gentoo cd and reinstall it....but the rest should be ok.

never underestimate the evil empire in its ability to destroy linux partitions
However, ppl only seem to get problems with xp, me should be ok

*LOL* Had to re-install windows twice because it only agrees with a certain way I install my drivers...*grr*, was easy though - thanx =)

You can say that again! I actually never heard of an XP installation not fscking preexistant linux partitions. With ME it's pretty much the same as with my 98... it just overwrites the bootloader (and that's why I have a lilo floppy instead... booting from rescue cds all that times was getting to my nerves  )
But since I'm cosidering of "upgrading" to XP have ever heard of issues with partitions on other drives? Cuzz I'm not letting them on the same drive with my gentoo, that's for SURE! 
Or perhaps disconect my gentoo disk, install the b0nker and then reconnect it? I don't mind the trouble if it saves the penguin

I installed Windoze XP next to my Red Hat without any problems, except for the boot loader part. Note that I gave Windoze a hard drive of its own, so I don't know what would happen when installing on the same physical drive
I was curious about the subject, so I searched a bit on microsoft.com. They acknowledge the fact that their setups overwrite all possible boot managers, yet they don't seem to think the fault is with them All they do is advice you to rerun lilo/grub to put it in your MBR again. Nowhere a possibility to disable the install of the bootloader, not even through CLI |

I have XP on hda and gentoo on hdb, no issues (other than a bootloader thing, but no probs with partitions) As long as they're on different physical drives, there should be no problem. |
