I'm looking for a lightweight open source (read...no SPYWARE) mp3/ogg player for a Windows box. I love winamp 2.6.x but it is no longer in development as far as I know. I also love xmms as it is a very good winamp 2.6.x clone and open source...but as far as I have found it is not ported to windows. Low memory bloat is a important factor as well. Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried out foobar2000 yet? It's not fully opensourced (the core is closed, but most of the plugins are open), but it's definitely memory efficient and fast.

There's also UI plugins that can mimic the Winamp-esque skinning functionality that XMMS and Winamp have, but I personally prefer the more useful columnsui myself.

Even though the old winamp isnt in development, what is it missing that you want?

I think he wants an open-source player though...

Personally I think anything Winamp 2.* is beautiful. It is closed source but is still the lightest fully featured media player out there. It can be grabbed @ oldversion.com

If you want a media player that is OSS simply for the fact that it is OSS, why are you using Windows?

Winamp 2.9x - I don't know where they got up to - is great. Still perfectly viable in my book.

Maybe he's forced to, due to school or work policy?

I ended up installing Foobar2000lite on my Windows-laptop, Winamp 2.x took up too much RAM. A shame it doesn't support MIDI, though.

Yea, this is for my machine at work....I run gentoo at home. Any ways, I guess I will just stick with winamp 2.6.x, it really is perfection as far as an audio player. I was just looking for somehting that may have still been in development.

Isn't winamp still being developed? or are you just refering to the 2.X versions. why not just version 5 and use classic skin? 3 totally sucked but 5 was a step back in the right direction i found.

Get Winamp 5. It's still in active development (unlike Winamp 2.x), and you can disable all sorts of stuff, including modern skins support in the installer , rendering it nearly bloat-free.

Not to down play your scenerio, but I ran Winamp 2.* on a P150 Gateway Solo laptop w/32mb, and it was fine...

i was a huge winamp 2.x holdout, but I've found over the last few months that winamp 5.x is just as non-bloated-- not in actually consumption, but in feeling- unlike winamp 3.x.

I love winamp5 - xmms is nice, but it's pretty ugly by comparison. The big killer is the media library - I've got a fair few songs, and XMMS does *nothing* to organise them in any way. It's fine for dealing with a hundred songs, but not thousands.

Winamp2 is of course pretty much the same. I don't find 5 bloated at all though - so I'd recommend that, except of course it's closed source.
Why are you after open source? I mean, it's a Good Thing, sure, but you have to take what you can get, and it's not like that OS is exactly open...
