Gentoo installation on RAID0+1 via FastTrack S150 TX4

Does anyone have any experience in setting up a Gentoo system on a "hardware"-RAID using the FastTrack S150 TX4 controller?

I already tried with some other distributions, but it seems, that Promise haven't even managed to handle a 2.6 kernel...
So far it only worked with SuSE 8.1, which isn't a real solution in my opinion.

I haven't found any information on the loss of performance when setting up a software-RAID - however, if it isn't that high, I would consider it a possible way as well. Any ideas about this?
