Well, the topic says it all. I need to upgrade my GeForce 4 Ti4200 64MB vid card to something better so I can savour the flavour of Doom 3. Of course, I do have limits and I want to stick to an NVidia card with the best price/performance ratio, that will play Doom 3 with no slowdowns/choppyness at a good quality setting. I was thinking something like a FX5800??? I think? Is that a good card?

Look here to see how all the cards perform on different systems:

A Geforce 6800 should do nicely. You can get an eVGA one at newegg.com for less than $300

Do NOT buy a 5200 *shudder*

I'd just skip the FX line and get a 6800.

the 5200 is just the FX version of a geforce 4 mx440, supporting directx 9

The mx440 is a geforce 2 with directx 8 support added. It's a POS. Don't buy those cards unless you absolutely cannot afford a decent card.

If you want to spend less than $300 I'd say you have two choices:

5900 XT for <$200
6800 for <$300

If you don't mind spending over $300, there'd the 6800 GT.

I have a FX5600 and it works ok with doom 3. I have it on high settings running at 640x480. Its smooth, doesn't look as good as a 6800 but.... 8)

As aethyr mentioned, the 5900XT is well worth the money. I used to have a FX5200 and i wouldn't recommend that to my worst enemy. What a POS the 5200 is. I wouldn't even go below the 5900 if at all possible. And obviously if you're loaded, buy the 6800.

Ive only got Windoze experience to work from here. (stupid no linux client on CD) but i got a Radeon 9800 pro. and my doom kept crashing and it was slow, then i realized that i had Catalyst 4.3 (newest is 4.7 :) ) so i upgraded, now i can play at High Quality mode at 1280x1024 and it runs smoothly :D but since were talking about ATI and their linux drivers, it will most likey be a shitty card (unless if ATI keeps the tradition of good performance only with ID's engines :D )

just sold my radeon 9800 Pro today and bought a 6800 GT... all i can say is wow... the 6800 GT owns the crap out of the 9800 Pro... hands down.. Doom3 now looks so much better...

9800 Pro - 1024x768 Medium Quality

6800 GT - 1280x1024 Ultra Quality 4x8x

mmm Doom3.. if you got the cash... the 6800 GT is the way to go....

I have a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra ... I'm not all that happy with it... it's not bad, but I can tell how much better Doom 3 would look with something like the 6800. I took about a dozen in game screenshots earlier today though. Check them out ... give you something to go on.

These are 1024x768, 2x Anti Aliasing, and all other visual settings set to Yes except for one (can't remember which one I shut off.)

Yeah, I'll testament that the FX5200 is a POS for 3D gaming, its a good budget desktop card but thats about it. Apparently there were 5200Ultra's or something along those lines that were a fair bit better but I digres.. I was actually looking at video cards myself this morning in preperation of D3 and yeah, I probably wouldnt go for anything less than an FX5900.

Geforce 6800 => 2 molex on it => you need a new power-supply.
D3 should run on a 4MX (in 320x240 maybe )
btw isn't doom3 suppose to be shipped with nvidia cards in the near future ?

Lol, that's not all, not for me anyway ;) I ordered one but it turned out I had to buy a whole new machine because my mainboard couldn't handle the card and my processor was nullifying the card's performance. Ah well, was about time anyway.

How near? I hadn't heard about that, but it would be nice, because I'm looking to buy a 6800GT + d3 soon as the linux binaries come out.

Someone said Gigabyte 6800GT comes with Doom3.

Update: I see it's expected the 12. this month (Norway).

Okay, after reading through some suggestions (thanks for the suggestions by the way), I am thinking of purchasing a Leadtek A400TDH GeForce 6800 AGP8X 128MB. I found this one for $385 Canadian not including tax. What do you guys think? Is this a good decision? Someone mentioned waiting about a month or so before purchasing because prices are expected to fall. But that applies at all times of the year, so theoretically, I could wait forever. But anyways, I want to see a significant difference between the new card I purchase, and my old Asus GeForce 4 Ti4200 64MB.
