Well yes. Kind of.

First, the latest Kernel that seems to work ist 2.6.5-gentoo-dev. All newer kernels seems to have soemthing changed that prevents vmnet from working. Tried serveral versions (mm,gentoo, love).

Second, fd and usb are not supported on amd64. You need to disable fd and have

Code:

usb.present=false

in your .vmx.

If you build your kernel with framebuffer support, you'll have no dga and no fullscreen support. to disbale the warnings on every start, add

Code:

xinfo.noDGA = true

in /op/vmware/lib/config

Now it *seems* to work for me.

We are talking amd64-64bit here. 32bit should be no problem at all.

No problems here with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r11. Maybe you have to reemerge vmware because the patches are changing quick :-) (vmware-any-any-update75 now). You have to do an emerge sync before of course.

Both done, of course. Even applied the any-any patches manually. Are you running 64-bit?

Yes Sir.

Code:

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Well, I'll try to reemerge vmware again later after booting the -r11 kernel.

What's strange is, that I can do a vmware-config.pl just fine and it doesn't complain. But when I do /etc/init.d/vmware start I'll get the [!!].

Don't try starting /etc/init.d/vmware right after running vmware-config.pl as it will just try to start the services that vmware-config has already started and fail. So just run vmware-config.pl and then start vmware, after a reboot you can then start /etc/init.d/vmware to start the neccesary services.

4.5.2 build 8848

2.6.7-gentoo11

didn't need to apply any patches, just listed it in /etc/portage/package keywords as ~amd64

also make sure to enable all the OSS options to get sound working

now i do get a strange "screen error" when booting sometime in addition to the normal yelling about not haveing DGA enabled (can't recompile xfree without it yelling about xorg, don't want to switch to xorg b/c xfree is working great)

but do you guys really think this is a 64-bit version of vmware?

if so, how can you tell?

anyway, running bench on matlab shows that the virtual machine is only 1-20% slower than a native one running windows

i have noticed it periodically locking but i think it is due to mounting a remote drive on another computer

they should be able to make a 32-bit vm run even faster than native, no?

4.5.2 build 8848
2.6.7-gentoo11

my vmware can not be configured correctly
here is the response

Making sure services for VMware Workstation are stopped.

The correct version of one or more libraries needed to run VMware Workstation
may be missing. This is the output of ldd /opt/vmware/bin/vmware:

before you can run VMware Workstation.

First, vmware is not 64bit. You are running a 32bit application in IA32 emulation. Also, as I understand it, vmware currently DOES NOT include support for a 64bit Guest OS.

You will never get better performance in a virtual machine as you do when an OS is running natively. There are abstraction layers between the Guest OS and the Host OS that will always slow it down to some extent.

So after an adventure-filled week making the transition to a 64-bit system, I've learned about the situation with USB on 64-bit Linux...And I would LOVE to have my Palm sync'd to a VM I made especially for the purpose.

Has anyone heard of any development of patches to the (I assume) 64-bit kernel code to fix this issue?

Im also running 64 bit native and having trouble. I get this error when i try to run vmware:

Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate loadable module in module_path: "libraleigh.so"

I cannot get around this and /etc/init.d/vmware gives [!!] on a few modules. What gives? Also I cannot unload the vmnet module manually. I have tried the vmware-any-any update to to avail...

i've been running vmware for the past 2 months no problems with 2.6.7-rx kernels to the newest 2.6.9 last night. i just did the emerge for it and ran the configure script, and i'm running in 64 bit now.

Hi Krobar,

Could you include your kernel-config for kernel 2.6.8.1 and kernel 2.6.9.
I've got problems getting VMWare to work in 64bit-gentoo.
I first tought it was a 64-bit issue, but I have similar problems running it in 32bit mode with kernel 2.6. With kernel 2.4 it works fine in 32bit mode.
All vmware-modules compile and load. VMWare loads, but when I want to run a VM it doesn't start. The 'Play' button stays on for a few seconds and then switches to 'Off'. When pressing the 'Play' button again, VMWare tells me that another VM is already running although this is not the case (no window, no cpu-load, no processes in 'top', ...).

Configuration:
- Tyan thunder K8W (with latest BIOS)
- 2 x Opteron 246
- 4GB Ram
- WD Raptor 74GB + 2x200GB SATA Seagate
- NVidia GForce 6800GT with driver 1.0.6111
- running Gentoo 'stable'

Wouter ;-)

I just had to say "NICE CONFIG!" OMFG I just wet myself...so much lustworthy hardware :-P Oh and btw, I have problems with Vmware in 64 bit native as well...

Just for the record:
Linux gentoo64 2.6.7-gentoo-r11 #1 SMP Thu Sep 9 19:21:46 EST 2004 x86_64
Vmware - Latest version installed: 4.5.2.8848-r1
Xorg - Latest version installed: 6.7.0-r1

Works fine but as said before: No USB/FLoppy/DGA Full Screen

But..

Quote:
If you build your kernel with framebuffer support, you'll have no dga and no fullscreen support. to disbale the warnings on every start, add...
.

Whats this? If you DON'T build in kernel framebuffer support will full screen DGA work??
Someone tell me this is true?

4.5.2 build 8848
Linux localhost 2.6.7-gentoo-r14 #1 Fri Oct 22 20:08:18 GMT 2004 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Emerge and configuration without problems, only some delay on the startup, anyone had noticed that?

Well, the real problem is a very strange issue: when i execute vmware as root it works well but when i'm not root whenever i try to select text from a box (inside vmware, NOT inside the virtual PC) it crashes and prints:

Code:
bash-2.05b$ vmware

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C

Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers

Gdk-ERROR **: file gdkselection.c: line 331 (gdk_string_to_compound_text): assertion failed: (property.encoding == gdk_atom_intern ("COMPOUND_TEXT", FALSE) && property.format == 8)
aborting...

Same as me.

Does anyone known how to boot a RAW partition?? I tried with my phisicall win 2000 partition but while booting grub prints a "error 21". What should i do to avoid the grub multibooting?

Do you have multiple harddrives? The error could result from grub finding different harddrive numbers at boot time and within linux. Start grub in linux and press tab after
Code:
root (hd
to see the drives, and then tab to see the partitions. You could solve this by forcing a different configuration in
Code:
grub.conf
when starting win from vmware using the
Code:
map
command in grub. I recommend to avoid grub on the windows harddrive, because vmware is then able to skip this step.

If you only have one harddrive... *shrug*
