I guess (through rivatuner in windows) you can softmod the card from 12 to 16 pipelines effectively turning it into a 6800GT. Of course, that's assuming that the extra 4 pipelines aren't defective. I think this has sealed the deal for me. I'm gonna pick this card up probably next week.

Blah @ naysayers of Geforce FX 5200!
 Iplay DOom3 on this outdated system , with the 5200 in it , its unstoppable!!!!! , i play all the hardcore games , and with wine usually . My box has earned its place on my desktop , simply because i can play Doom3 with it , although im still awaiting the binaries for the game so i can see the videos (mostly) . i cant get past a part i nthe second stage that requires me to use a panel , just cant see it , otherwise i can play D3 without too many glitches , and at a decent framerate! So kiss my booty ! YOU ARE DOOM3D! :P

BTW - If you have a borderline vid card that works with D3 you can tweak a config setting to get better performance:

I too have had good luck with the FX5200, FWIW. I run it in 1024 x 768, 2x AA, and a few of the eyecandies on as well. It looks fantastic, although I am sure that a 6800 would look stunning. As it is, I find the game to be quite playable and very smooth. The FMV runs slightly choppy, but a friend of mine who was watching it too said that seems to be how it is running on most all systems. Bottom line - the FX5200 is not a bad card if you can't afford more!

Tom's Hardware has an article that talks about this topic.

There was also a Doom 3 article posted today.

If you're looking for a cheaper card, and you can wait a bit more, there's the NV43 coming out that will probably play Doom 3 better than any other sub $200 card:

Now heres a connundrum, the X800XT is technically the faster in all the benchmarks i've seen until this, but with doom3 being the best of the best, who do i bellieve... if only they'd waited till i bought a graphics card!
