Answered my own question 
According to http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml#upgrade-3.3-to-3.4

No need to re-emerge the old gcc. No need to recompile glibc either.
Just # emerge --oneshot libstdc++ |

i'm having the same problem, seems like all this happened after upgrade to gcc4
seeing as realplayer is binary, i assume this is the problem?

i was looking on the forums about it, and this was the most relevant thread i found, if anyone can point me to a better place?
i don't have a libstdc++.so.5 anywhere i've looked (/lib /usr/lib) i do have libstdc++-v3.so and lots of libstdc++.2.* versions
is it really necessary to emerge libstdc++-v3? its massive (like 30 megs!) and my computer is only puny 
edit:
i found this thread, seems to suggest that yes, i do need libsdtc++-v3 to run realplayer

Did you guys get this problem solved? I am running into the same issue with CVS and I desperately want it to work because I need CVS to check out the XGL sources from the repo so that I can install XGL.

Ok, I'm sure this will be a stupid question. I overlooked a mistake on one of the kid's computers. It seems I had forgotten to change the compiler from 3.3.6 to 3.4.6. So I used the revdep-rebuild method to update it. I had used the emerge -e method on the rest of the systems. Anyway, in trying to get rid of programs that link to libstdc++.so.5, I noticed that media-video/realplayer installs a precompiled player. I never really paid much attention to it before, so I didn't notice before.
So my question is, why isn't the ebuild called media-video/realplayer-bin and why isn't there an ebuild that compiles the source? I haven't read the license yet. Is that the problem? Does the binary version add something, or does the source not compile? The source can be downloaded from: https://helixcommunity.org/download.php/1949/realplay-10.0.7-source.tar.bz2
I'll try it out latter tonight if I don't hear anything here first... |

RealPlayer evidently has security bugs that are not going to be fixed and it is hard masked. Another question is what to replace it with. I've tried both mplayer and alsaplayer to play streaming FM radio. Both just stop playing from time to time with mplayer working better in this regard. But neither including gnome-mplayer has provision to save the location of the station listened to. Realplayer had a nice way to save this information and to switch from one station to another. Is there something else that has this functionality? Thanks,
