I would like to update to KDE version 3.0.4 from my current version. I am affraid that i will have to reconfigure a bunch of stuff. Am I able to just do an emerge kde and let it update? Or will this overwrite everything just as if I had just started from a fresh install?

I also remember from another problem that I had posted in the forum, someone told me to change the value of a line in a file that made it so that if I emerged any program it would overwrite all of my settings. I would like to change that back, but I dont know where to find that anymore.

Please help.
Thanks

you can safely upgrade by emerge -u kde, I've done it and all my parameters were saved. I think the file you seek for is /etc/make.globals and the line is CONFIG_PROTECT. add "/etc /usr/kde/3/share/config" to get your files protected in these directories. I can't remeber if an env variable exists... I remember it was written in the gentoo install guide... juste avec a look. export CONFIG_PROTECT=0 or something like this.

Another great command is:

#man emerge

Some real good stuff there!

I did an emerge - u KDE and it failed. It seems that there is a problem with the new version and something else. (whatever. i was reading that in another forum on why it failed. I dont want to discuss the failure) after the failure, i had no users. I could not su -, the promp in terminal said something to the effect of this computer has no name. Ultimately out of frustration, I rebooted the computer. now I can only get as far as the Xfree86 login prompt, and of course there are no apparent users. whatever I try fails.

What have I done, and what can I do?
