First a little background. Right now I have Gentoo running on a dual boot machine with RedHat 7.3. RH is on hda(60G) and Gentoo1.2 is on hdd (40G). What I was thinking about doing is using the Alternative installation guide to Install Gentoo 1.4 to hda using the Gentoo1.2 install . When all is said and done. Gentoo 1.4 will be the only OS on the machine (on hda). I guess my question is....

Can I use the same kernel for the 1.4 system as I do on the 1.2 without having to recompile it? I can do it, I just know I'll end up recompiling it 5 times because of missed options.

Thanks for the tips guys

Given different compiler optimization differences between GCC2.95 and GCC3.2 I'd say you should (should meaning would be most happy, I think if you choose not to it might work) recompile your kernel. However if you like how you have your kernel configured currently I know there is a way to save your kernel config and then use it when you recompile on your new system (saves you the step of 'make menuconfig' and also saves you the possibility that you will forget something.) Anyone done this before that can provide some insight?

I don't mind recompiling it so much as I want to make sure I have all the correct options selected. Can I use "make oldconfig" (or something to that effect, never tried it) and then recompile my kernel somehow?

Thanks for the help bonez

go to /usr/src/linux and copy .config to somewhere safe (a floppy etc), install gentoo, cp .config back to /usr/src/linux, run make menuconfig to check all the settings and enable/disable any you want, then recompile & copy
