I'm getting this error updating to the 3.4 gcc...

Code:

root # emerge -p world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  NS   ] sys-devel/gcc-3.4.2-r2
[ebuild  N    ] sys-libs/libstdc++-v3-3.3.4

root# emerge gcc

....lots of output...

checking for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... /var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.4.2-r2/work/build/gcc/xgcc -B/var/tmp/portage/gcc-3.4.2-r2/work/build/gcc/ -B/usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ -B/usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/lib/ -isystem /usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/include -isystem /usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/sys-include  -m32
checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out
checking whether the C compiler works... configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.
If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'.
See `config.log' for more details.
make: *** [configure-target-libstdc++-v3] Error 1

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/gcc-3.4.2-r2 failed.

!!! (no error message)
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

Try to comile gcc with "FEATURES=-sandbox". That should fix your problem...

thank you !!!

that did it ... but, just to avoid silly questions in the future... how could I have deduced that answer by myself... (in other words... how did you know that the sandbox thing would have worked ?!?!)

Usually searching the forum or the internet might give you some answers...

while I agree that stupid questions (like mine) should righteously receive commensurable answers... (and I also agree that the suboptimal way my question was posed could most easily induce anyone in chosing such strategy),
I was asking what conneced the -sandbox feature to the specific error I was receiving from the compiler (or, better, where I could find way to relate things one to the other... I'm happy to apply "precooked" solutions, but if there is any chance I can understand "things" I tend to be happier... otherwise I would have used windoz ... but I prefer not)

Well in my case: I had that problem too and i guess Kurscher came about that prob too somehow... Btw. the question wasn't stupid, that's what the forum (especially the AMD64-Forum cuz the 64-bit technology is still something new and not so common...) is here for... I found the solution by asking here in the forum myself and i was pointed to the gentoo-bugzilla. In this special case i don't think that the sandbox can be connected to the solution: disable the sandbox! But maybe i am wrong??!??!
