does anybody know whether by emerging postgresql, php automagically becomes enabled to work with the pgsql module or not? I know that with mysql, it doesn't make a difference because mysql support is implicit anyway.

with redhat, I had to install the php-pgsql rpm in order for things to work.

Check the ebuild for some line with 'use pgsql' or some $myconf type variable with configure options. You can tell if it checks for a USE setting, in whcih case you should add an entry to /etc/make.conf, or if it has nothing mentioning PostgreSQL then it should be safe to assume that it is automatic.
