strange screen effect at 2.6.7

i tried to switch to 2.6.7.
i comiled the kernel changed symlink /usr/src/linux the grub.conf as well. copied the bzImage to boot and tried to restart.

Bu all i get with the new kernel is a screen full of vertical white lines with some colored fragments in between.
even though i can't see nothing it seems that the consoloe ist up becaus i managed to reboot blindly.

Got any ideas what the source of this is?

Are you trying to use framebuffer console or bootsplash? Try using a normal boot without framebuffer and see if the screen weirdness is still there.
