I just emerged kde (3.0.4) and the old xfree-4.1.0. After that I emerged the new xfree-4.2.1 and runned xf86config script and test the setting with startx. The following error came up:
Code:

Screens found but none hava a usuable configuration
Fatal server error no screens found

After that I tried the fx86cfg script and startx worked. But when I tried to start kde with xdm it looks like if xdm ends up in an endless loop.

Anyone an idea?

My XF86config file made with the xf86config script

And this monitor

change your xf86config to use "nvidia" as your video card driver and emerge nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx then try startx again.

you could also re-run the xf86config again and choose 322 for your video card which will load the 'nv' driver and this will work but wont give you 3d acceleration , but after you get X up and running you can then emerge the nvidia stuff

I rerunned xf86config with 322 and it works now even with the nvidia drivers. xdm only still starts twm but that should not be a problem.

Thx

if you want startx to just jump into kde without the kdm login manager add an .xinitrc file to your home directory with the line startkde on it....so once you are logged in as that user and you type startx from the console kde will launch.

Also if you want other programs to run in addition to your window manager or desktop environment, just add their command to the .xinitrc file (above the window managers). You must also use an ampersand (&) at the end of the command otherwise no other commands will be executed.
