Hello,

I have messed up a Gentoo-System when I had to copy it to another computer for repartitioning my haddisk.
As I copied it back the permissions were changed so that most programms only ran under root.
I restored the permissions for the files that were mentioned in error-messages, but some apps don't work without having a clue why.

The big problem is the KDE terminal-emulator konsole.
The window opens but there is just a black cursor in it, no 'bash-2.05b#' and I cannot type in anything.

Which files' permissions do I habe to check?

There must be a permission problem with a file or a device.
Does anyone know on which files konsole depends?

There is the same problem with other consoles.
aterm writes the following error in ~/xsession-errors:

aterm: can't open pseudo-tty
aterm: aborting

I really need help.
I did an emerge -e aterm (because aterm doesn't work too and I think for the same reason as konsole doesn't) and it didn't help.
I checked the permissions of dev/pty with a working gentoo-syste, it didn't help.
I have no clue where to search further

hi,

after move the "/dev"-folder (incl. permissions) from a running gentoo-system to my workstation => no success!

after untar the "/dev"-folder from stage3 (incl. permissions) to the workstation => no success!

so i thougt, that wrong permissons in the "/dev"-folder won't be the reason...

BUT, when i made a "chmod -R 777 /dev" (only to check, if the permissions in /dev really won't be the prob), the problem was SOLVED!
(okay, now i will leave the big smile on my face for this evening...
and search the ONE wrong permission later...)

ciao

Hi guys,

You should make sure whether `pty` permissions are correct in /etc/devfsd.conf file if you use `devfs` at boot.

Code:

# vi /etc/devfsd.conf
.......................................................................................................
.......................................................................................................
# Uncomment the following if you want to set the group to "tty" for the
# pseudo-tty devices. This is necessary so that mesg(1) can later be used to
# enable/disable talk requests and wall(1) messages.
REGISTER        ^pty/s.*     PERMISSIONS -1.tty  0600
REGISTER        ^pts/.*      PERMISSIONS -1.tty  0600

Moreless, copy a working /etc/devfsd.conf file to your /etc directory and reboot.

I'll have a look.
I couldn't solve the problem and gave up after several hours.

hi ecoolcat,

i've allready checked the entries in the devfsd.conf...
they are the same.
so i would say, that's not the reason for our prob. :-(
but thx for your help so far...

let me know, when you know the reason of our prob!

ciao
