Se eu "copy"e "paste" o conteúdo do meu XF86Config-4 file do Mandrake no XFreeConfig-4 do gentoo, tendo o mesmo perfil de video (nvidia driver) e obviamente instalando o driver do NVIDIA no gentoo, vocês acham que vai funcionar???

Se os drivers estiverem instalados da mesma maneira, não vejo porque não ;)

conforme mantem as libraries do XF e o layout de linguagem, quando aos devices de video (opengl, screen, etc) isso podes copiar, aparentemente é suposto funcionar.

Eu não uso o xfree, uso o xorg-x11

Acho que no máximo você terá que alterar os diretórios das fontes mas acho nem precisa ;)

O que você pode ter problemas é na localização de arquivos como fontes e o mapa rgb, mas se usar o XFree e não o Xorg não deverá ter problemas com isso. Quanto ao arquivo de configuração, me lembro que se chamava XF86Config-4 em algumas distros, mas no Gentoo eu sempre usei XF86Config. Veja se não se trata de um link para XF86Config ou se o XFree realmente lê esse arquivo. Caso contrário, copie para XF86Config.

Na verdade atualmene uso o xorg no Mandrake Cooker (após upgrade do 10 CE para o Cooker), mas tive que copiar e colar o conteúdo do extinto XFree86config-4 no Xorg.conf para fazer o o MDK cooker funcionar e tudo esta OK com o Mandrake.
Eu fiz a pergunta, pois como ainda não conheço o gentoo (me esqueci que tambem era Lunix), pensei que não pudesse funcionar.
Obrigado pelas respostas, como já instalei o gnome vou tentar entrar na interface gráfica.

Se não me engano, quando o X arranca tenta ler primeiro o XF86Config-4 e só depois, caso o -4 não exista, vai ler o XF86Config. Quanto ao xorg.conf, não me lembro qual era a prioridade :?

funcionou direitinho...apenas copiei meu antigo XF86Config-4 do mandrake (antes de fazer o upgrade para xorg) para o etc/X11 do gentoo e neste momento estou no gentoo.
