Hi all,

Browsing through the forums recently I notice that there are many questions poorly answered. Many seem like the would-be helper didn't even read the question asked all the way though or gave an answer unrelated to the subject.

I feel alot of this is because of the unanswered post intiative and users wanting to get their post count higher.

I myself have had a couple of questions senslessly answered, then never replied to again just because it doesn't show up on unanswered posts anymore...

What do others think about this? I could post some examples but I don't really want to insult anyone.

Maybe a better "intiative" would be an unresolved post initiative. The owner of the thread sets whether the problem/question has been answered. Perhaps when initially posting, a flag could be set as to whether to even keep track of resolution for posts that do not require one.

That would make more sense, IMHO.

I like that idea (the unresolved part).

Also you could disable displaying the post count, but still show the status.

I thought about unresolved but users will not remember to do that, or know to do that unless there is a check mark on the forums. That would require editing the forums code for include the check box. I can't say I see that happening.

Well, any change that you are talking about regarding this would constitute a change in the forums code. A checkbox could be added. Also, when email notification is sent out that a reply to your topic has been posted, it could have a link to use to mark the thread as resolved.
The non-code solutions are social engineering. The forum admins could send out an email to all registered users saying not to respond to topics unless you know what you are talking about. I think that would do more harm than good.
However, I don't think that the issue is people posting uninformed answers, but rather that people generally browse for unanswered posts rather than recent posts. Users should be encouraged to try to answer what they think they can. It helps to build confidence while learning more about Linux/Gentoo. I really think that adding a category of resolved/unresolved may help the symptom of questions dangling with only one useless answer.
Now, we just have to get an admin's attention....

I feel in general people are willing to help and try their best to do so. Only in some rare case people try to "cheat" with postcount++ replies. This is an exception, and if you're absolutely sure someone does it for this purpose, you should tell here, it will be handled appropriately. I don't think anything else is needed.

I really don't see why people care that much about the postcount. It's just an arbitrary number that says nothing except that the person spent some time here.

With out postcounts how do you suppose I show off my enormous member..

Also wiith no postcounts, you have to kill the ranging or alter the system to be a karma system instead (which would cause problems).

Another poor user let down by sys admins

But you are asking on the wrong place, new features for phpBB should be asked at http://www.phpbb.com. We do not implement new features nor use mods that are not part of standard of phpBB because they are quite likely to break during upgrades.

The general topic was more or less discussed here.

PJP,

Thanks for your input.

I think they are different topics really. I should have been a bit more specific. The only reason I care that post count is displayed is that many questions go unresolved. Also I believe that this is in part to the unanswered post intiative. I feel we should look at another option to make sure everyone gets helped.
