It goes like this:
[buffer info]
[CPU/cache info]
Enabling fast FPU save and restore... done.
Enabling unmasked SIMD FPU exception support... general protection fault:0000
CPU: 0
EIP: 0010:[<c01756b3>] Not tainted
[registers, stack, & call trace follow]

...using gentoo-sources, started from the default config and only turned on options explicitly mentioned in the install guide (using the stage 3 install from rc4).

my guess is you have the wrong the processor enabled in the kernel config. however, a h/w desc of your box + your a link to your kernel config will also help.

It's an Athlon t-bird @ 1400MHz (running at spec, no overclocking for me) on a FIC model AD11 mobo.

my kernel config is here:
http://jwidman.com/~james/dot-config

and my dmesg output is here:
http://jwidman.com/~james/dmesg

looks like the liveCD doesn't use the SIMD FPU exception-thingy (which is what my kernel is up-chucking). I'm wondering if it's safe to just turn that off?

Yay! That was it! :D

Thank you muchly. Now on to the tweakage!

How convenient that the bug was fixed just yesterday, and all I had to do was `emerge sync && emerge -u gentoo-sources` .

This rocks. :)
