hi everyone.

with the release of rc2, no mm with follow soon, since andrew is on vacation for
two weeks. but there's light at the end of the tunnel; mm seemed to cause various
problems - during compile (scsi, samba), and during runtime (usb-related).

those problems should now have melted away like a ..drumroll.. popsicle in the sun.

this applies to 2.6.8-rc2

what's in this release (in order of appea.. i mean patching):
Code:
reiser4-2004.07.16-19.38-linux-2.6.7-mm7.diff
2.6.8-rc1-mm1-np1
vesafb-tng-0.9-rc2-2.6.7.patch
bootsplash-3.1.4-2.6.7-rc2-r2.diff
lufs-0.9.7-2.6.0-test9.patch
lirc-2.6.5-mm1-20040406
config-nr-tty-devices.patch
9000_SuSE-117-writeback-lat.patch

optional patch: vesa-rrc patch (replaces vesa-tng)
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
bzip2 -dc 2.6.8-rc2-love1-rrc.bz2| patch -p1

get your popsicle here or here or here before it melts.

ebuild - thanks to DaMouse 8)

further thanks to: Irrumator, Obilon, ejohnson, socke, uriahheep, chaosite and blutkind 8)

for those with reiser4 and apache + mod_php, do the following to prevent lockups:
Code:
add EnableSendfile Off to your directory directive for / in /etc/apache2/conf/commonapache2.conf

I'd just like to point out that adding
Code:
RESTRICT="nomirror"
to the top of the ebuild will prevent it from trying all the official gentoo mirrors, which don't have it the needed tarballs.

This may have been discussed before but it would take forever to find it. what happened to nicks scheduler? Is it even looked at anymore, is it there just not mentioned, or is going to be in love again? just in general whats going on?

Glad to see a new love release, works well here...

Thanks to all the folks who work on it

Just one question:
Why other typical love patches are out?
Too much work, they don't get in...are considered useless, or what?
Don't want to blame, I'm only curious

well, some of us (if not all), felt that most patches were included on a whim merely to
convenience a few users, causing the patch to become larger with every version, making
us lose sight of what the patch was created for in the first place - performance and some
experimentation with new patches.

and indeed, to be honest, patching everything into it had become a pain as well.

now, instead of disallowing all those patches access to love(-sources), users can make
add-on patches such as the vesa-rrc patch in the first post of this thread, allowing others
to hand-pick what they want in their kernel source.

people who make patches work with love-sources, do not have to make them apply to a
whole host of included patches which might make fixing failed hunks a far more difficult
task than it now is - they just have to make them apply to the base patch.

though some combinations might not work without some failed hunks, i'm quite sure that
with the help of the ever-growing love-sources community, making them patch properly is
only a few friendly questions and answers away.

the main idea behind this is that the patch is (in part) created by, and for the community,
sharing the work and dividing the time needed for the creation of the patch across more
than just the one maintainer.

as for the patches which are not in the core-patch: i find it interesting that there have not
been a lot of users asking about patches they miss in these releases. in a way it is a con-
formation that they were for a fact included on a whim, for mere passers-by.

oh, and with less patches we can be more sure that it all works as it should

With regards to the left-out patches.... Win4Lin would be very much appreciated :)
I still use it and I lack the skills to patch it in myself, the patching will work but the fixing of the failing hunks aint my streak... or someone should explain me how to fix them... that would also be nice :)

how do I fix the hunks at all....
It gives me a .rej file which looks like a diff-file... should I add those changes to the original file or what?

exactly.

look at the .rej file, then try to put in those hunks manually
in the existing file (filename minus .rej - not the .orig)

I agree, a slimmer love is good for everyone. Maybe we could come up with a system for which patches to include, such as a poll at love-sources.sourceforge.net to determine which patches the most people want??
I'm not trying to make anyone's life more difficult, just a suggestion :D

Yea. /me also hangs his head in shame...

Well, it just started compiling a few minutes ago...and it seems to be going well...

UPDATE: Well, it finished compiling and built the kernel, so I'm going to copy it over to /boot and add it to my GRUB config...then we'll see what happens... =P

@ryceck:
sorry i didn´t see your post earlier. I don´t know what all this code in those files is, i just look at the .rej file and try to assign these lines manually (and most of the time, it works then :-))
PickledOnion´s page is a really good ressource for looking for win4lin-patches, he´s the "love-win4lin-guru" ;-)
