Now, going by the descriptions at gentoo-portage.com, I know that Development-Sources is a plain 2.6 kernel, and Gentoo-Dev-Sources is a 2.6 kernel with extra Gentoo patches. That's pretty clearly explained.

But, I haven't been able to find any text anywhere describing exactly what those extra Gentoo patches are. So here's my question. What kind of value-added material do I get from using Gentoo-Dev-Sources as opposed to plain Development-Sources?

And what added benefit do I get from using Gentoo Dev Sources 2.6.7-R11 as opposed to, say, 2.6.7-R6? Inquiring minds need to know!

Okay, as for which patches are used, well, it downloads a tarball, I think the only way to really know which patches are applied would be to download that tarball and check for yourself. As for the difference between say r6 and r11, easy, cd /usr/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources/, and check the changelog.

The gentoo-dev-sources are optimized so that you can play games, listen to music etc at the same time as you're emergeing something, and it wont feel jumpy.
The differences between 2.6.7-R11 opposed to 2.6.7-R6, are mainly bugfixes, but sometimes some extra could show up, as these are to become 2.6.8 in a near future. The best thing are to follow the change log on kernel.org, and see what is happening with the kernel.
Hope this where to some help

I never noticed a changelog in my local portage tree before. That's pretty neat.

...And if it just means smoother performance, I guess I'm sold. Not that I wasn't already, of course. Thanks for your help!
