|
|
I am a Gentoo first-timer so please be gentle with me...
I am installing 1.4rc1 on a spare machine at home with only a 56k modem, so have downloaded the stage3 tarball from my fast connection at work and plan to "emerge --pretend" to get the packages at work and take them home on CD.
Anyways, the install has gone well so far, I have been connecting the modem from mandrake9 and chrooting over to gentoo so I have a functional internet connection but obviuosly not able to download big files. I have got as far as code listing 14.2 in the install instructions and hit a prob my /usr/src/ directory is completely empty so "make menuconfig" is failing. I have tried unpacking the install tarball a couple of times but still no directory, are the kernel sources located somewhere else? What should I be looking for?
I guess I could "emerge sys-kernel/whatever" but I want to avoid the download if possible..
Thanks in advance for any help |

Sorry, you will have to download kernel sources separately. The documentation is lying to you. This was reported as bug #8072. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

thanks rac, in the end I decided to just download anyway - it *only* took about an hour and a half. The good news is I now have a fully functional Gentoo Linux - woohoo.
I had a few probs getting LILO configured but all is now functional - I have a triple Gentoo, Mandrake and XP config and am feeling quite proud.
I have to say a well done to the team with 1.4rc1, if a noob like me can get it working anybody can.
My next question though, can I get emerge to print the --pretend output to a text file? |

Code: | $ emerge -up world > /tmp/afo |

thanks for the speedy answer rac.
Just check I am understanding the code correct;
this is to pretend update "world"
this is the section that specifies print to file and the location of the file?? |

Well, I've been burned badly by this bug. The system is a Dell Laptop with a broken pcmcia port using a pegasus-based usb nic. I used my debian partition to install 1.2 a few months ago. worked great since. decided to upgrade to 1.4rc1 by doing a reinstall.
booted the livecd.
hrm, no usb modules...
saw on docs that the portage tree and kernel sources were in the stage3 tarball (which I had luckily already downloaded onto my /home partition).
cfdisk and mke2fs later (to reorganize my partitions) and the disk is clean (except for /home)
mounted everything up and untarred the stage3 tarball....no kernel-sources or portage tree!! |

well it all ended pretty well, still sorting out mozilla etc but I have a very pretty looking Gnome2 desktop and everything is lightnin' fast (once I had sorted out the font problem with Gnome thanks to the desktop forum).
Allround excellent distro and great support forum - I am converted.
Now all I need is those lazy ar$e BT folk to get around to installing broadband in the wilds of cheshire and I can start from stage1. |
