|

i am sorry to bother you all... but i've tried all i could.
i have a system with hda1 as my boot, hda6 as swap and hda4 as root.
now i booted with the gentoo-cd and told grub> to root (hd0,0) and
setup (hd0) it did the root-command fine (fs is ..... type....)
but the setup told me it couldn't find /boot/grub/stage1 nor /grub/stage1
i allready checked and i did mount my hda1 to /mnt/gentoo/boot
and there are those files in there... i made sure ... i cp it.
where did i take my fatal step? |

Code: |
default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title=My example Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda3
|
writing this in the /boot/grub/grub.conf
?? |

no, I would have done that afterwards as stated in the installation file but i got sidetracked when this simple command decided to enjoy me with annoyance.
and don't i setup this stats as well by typing setup (....) ? |

If you have a boot partition, you should not need /boot in the path's. At least that is what worked for me.
Try this in your menu.lst file:
default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title=My example Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /bzImage root=/dev/hda4
Splashimage may just need to be this (can't remember):
splashimage=/grub/splash.xpm.gz |

allright... as i said in my very first posting.... the problem is :
i boot up into my allready set gentoo stage 3 ... kernel compiled... box
i mount my boot partition /dev/hda1 into /mnt/gentoo/boot
i type "grub" and voila... i see the ">" great... i type in root.. and grub does seem to comprehend my intention printing a friendly message telling me that it can read ext2 type 0x82 (linux) -very cool.
but:
i go on with enduring patience and an untroubled mind hoping the "setup (hd0)" (kick grubs ass into my MBR) will work... yet all it does is to present me with its now quite annoying sign of incompetence :
"can't find /boot/grub/stage1"
"can't find /grub/stage1"
ERROR #15 (or so)
NOW... what is wrong......
I've also noticed when i used my old SUSE - Lilo configuration with gentoo (exchanged suse with gentoo) that at boot up it searches my modules and checks dependencies in the DIR with kernel-name : 2.xxxx -the wrong one!!!
but this is just the NEXT thing i would like to care about...
so if someone can actually give me a piece of advice about grub...
i really want to run gentoo now !!!!
or what is the next best.... easy to costum -thing out there? |

just to make everything complete...
i just tried grub-install /dev/hda1 several ways...
it can't "rm: fs is read-only..."
i copied grub's read-only stage1 file to /mnt/gentoo/boot/grub... and mounted it as hda1... but it still doesn't want to give me a hint of what i am doing wrong...
could it be that because of me allready having installed the stage3 and kernel and having then booted (repeatedly) into it with the boot-cd to make the grub installation ...... this was to be seen as the fatal error gentoo keeps getting my hopes down with? |

1. Make sure that you have stage1 in /boot/grub
2. run grub, then:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 // this is probably the step you missed
depending on what it says here(ex: hd1,4), then
grub> root (hd1,4)
grub> setup (hd0) // ot install grub in the MBR
grub> quit
Remember to make the menu.lst and put it in /boot/grub directory.
you're done. _________________ bluesky

Do you dual boot? You have the choice to seledt another boot loader(ex: LILO) . correct? _________________ bluesky

Did you perform a change root after mounting the drives and before running grub?
# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash |

yes...
i tried the chroot command...
it made no difference what so ever. i am getting quite confused. linux never presented me with illogical stuff. really.
so.... what are the advantages of grub anyway`?
windows-like incompetence? i sure hope not... there has to be another ´problem... yet... i can't explain what it is. i followed all the steps necessary... and performed other operations that where supposed to fix that shit.... but nothing worked out so far.
but... yes.. what are the real advantages of grub compared to let's say lilo? |

Just a shot. Have you tried to put a link of /sbin/grub into /boot/grub like this:
cd /boot/grub
link -s /sbin/grub ./grub
It may help for the grub script to SEE better. _________________ bluesky

I know. But what I suggested is a way around it. I do not suggest that it(the problem) is a bug but if it is, then you need to find a way around it, right? _________________ bluesky

Did you say something about "read-only filesystem"? When you mount hda1, what type is it getting mounted as? Is there a possibility that it's getting mounted as some other filesystem type than you want? You can check this with the mount command. If this is the case, you can use mount's -t option to explicitly set the filesystem type. Also try searching the forums for "ghost and superblock" for information on how to use dd to zero out the part of the disk partition that causes this problem. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

allright... i reinstalled a minimal suse linux system... copied the gentoo over it - redownloaded the stage3 athlon.tar recompiled the gentoo-kernel - and grub installed without a problem...
i have no idea why exactly... but i like it.!!!!
now all i have to do is get grub to read my menu.1st
it did after i told it where it was to be found... can grub remember that or do i have to config it somewhere?
(btw... thanks for all your help..... exsp. bluesky...) |

I just had the same issue on a HD that formerly had Win2k on it. It seems that somehow grub has a problem overwriting what Win2k puts in the mbr? I used clean drive (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hd*) and the grub install went fine.
strange. Had me up late last night ;\ |

this could very well be the point... i do dual booting with win2k.
and win2k formerly was to be a single child. guess grub does have some troubles with win2k's boot |

I had the exact same problem. Here's how I fixed it:
Look in your /boot dir. If you dont see a grub folder, mount your boot partition that you made during install. Mine was hd4.
mount /dev/hd4 /boot
then run grub again. it didnt work the first time, but after i did this
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
and tried doing root (hd0,0) again, setup worked. I dont know why it worked all of a sudden. |
