Ok I have a machine that this is the info:
Intel Pentium 166MHZ MMX
RAM I need to find out
Now I have used Slackware on this machine with the 2.4 kernel and it worked nicely.
Now I am trying Gentoo on this machine with both a 2.4 kernel and a 2.6 kernel and both just restart the machine.
I didn't get a change to really play with the 2.4 but in the 2.6 kernel I tried to add in this option I found:
Generic x86 support.
Did not work.
I know that it can't be a serious error because the machine is able to boot other Linux's and DOSes. Yes I know DOS is dead but one day I wanted to play with FreeDOS. Windows I have no clue because its so slow and really Windows doesn't interest me. Too many crashes, forced software, and people telling me I can't edit whatever I want.
Do I need to enable or disable something in the kernel to make it work?
I really wish I could use a piece of software that would imitate a boot and test a kernel and give you the error at excatly why it didn't load. _________________ Let Jesus be with you . |

Sounds like something's seriously off if it just reboots the machine. You don't get any text at all?
The Generic x86 support basically compiles the kernel for any x86 architecture - sort of lowest common denominator. In theory it should run slower on a Pentium than compiling specifically for that cpu.
One assumes you set the cpu type correctly in the same place - in which case generic x86 isn't necessary to use the kernel on your machine. You just couldn't copy it to a 386 and have it work.
oh, DOS is not dead. I've got MS-DOS 6.22 on an old machine here for the purpose of running old games. It's bloody good - and since we paid for it back in the day, I still want to use the license. Lucky they didn't have Product Activation back then |

I do get some text but only after grub tried to load them if I hit the pause key. It says no errors loading the kernel. _________________ Let Jesus be with you . |

Randomly rebooting systems cry for a memtest86. Just type memtest at the Gentoo LiveCD boot prompt. _________________ If tugboats were bigger, they'd be the ones getting tugged. |

I seriously feel like a n00b. I setup Gentoo on other machines and thought I was great at it.
This was why it kept restarting.
I checked after someone said to check what processor it was compiled for and I thought it was fine then now I just found an option to specify which exact processor. It was set for PII and above. I just set it to Pentium MMX and for once it booted Gentoo. _________________ Let Jesus be with you . |
