I'm running with the patch I posted earlier with no problems so far.

Reiser4 has problems, it seems, as it doesn't link with my patch. neenee, when you made that change, does it run successfully?

Anyhow, if you're not running reiser4, and you want to use staircase 7.9, this appears to work.

it runs fine after the change i made to make it compile.

Nope, anything java crashes on my machine since I stepped up to love 2.6.7-r5 and beyond. I'v had to remove the java browser plugin so the browser wont crash when it hits embedded java.

Sorta annoying since everything else works perfectly.

I'm having exactly the same proble, all java apps such as jedit and webpages with java in crash too like this:-

Code:
bertha root # jedit

I have that same problem with the blackdown jdk.

I recently did a revdep-rebuild (for other reasons), and it says one of the blackdown binaries links against xpcom.so (or something like that). However, I've recompiled blackdown since I've had the problem (to see if that fixes it), so I don't know how to fix it.

Someone here said that the beta Sun jre 1.5 works (I don't know about Sun 1.4). Maybe I'll try installing it if I ever get to a point where I really need Java. Then I can get my variance annotations on.

well I use new beta version of java from SUN and I ma yet to see a problem in my browser, or standalone app

emerge -C <whatever java You use>, and then try this ebuild https://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=35009&action=view
it is part of this bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56449

That worked for me as well. I was previously using the blackdown jdk.

For all I know the non-beta sun jdk would have worked too but oh well, always fun to be on the very edge of things eh.

Thanks.

For what it's worth:

This problem has been noted on the linux kernel mailing list. People have said that compiling with gcc 2.95 stops the problem (not that anyone here will do that :)).

Someone else tracked down the actual commit that causes the breakage (http://linux.bkbits.net:8080/linux-2.6/cset%401.1743 if you're interested). I don't know how prompt a solution will be, though.

Edit: It's been confirmed by a couple other people that that is indeed the patch that kills Java. If you want to back it out of mm/love, it should fix your Java problems (assuming it's possible to do so :)).

Anyone know a link for this release,or are willing to upload it? The reason I need this old patchset is that I am troubleshooting poor performance of my nvidia card and am starting to think that it may some issues with the newer kernels,so I want to test all of the kernels pre-2.6.9 to see if that narrows things down.Unfortuantly I jumped on to reiser4 and so I am limited in the kernels I can try...I have heard good things about this particular patch though so I am keen on trying it.

Thanks

Thanks but I already had that link and it only goes up to 2.6.7-love5(and the link to the patch doesn't work for me). There is also apparently a love8 release also, which is a what I would prefer if it does not have any extra bugs introduced.Well better yet just a straight reiser4 patch for vanilla 2.6.7,but I have had no luck finding such a patch and patching in one of the newer releases is out of my reach, because of all the changes in the kernels since then.Anyway,I have managed to patch vanilla 2.6.5 with speedy5,which is an old love release + reiser4....I had to comment out a few things however because of some errors, which may cause some issues but I don't plan on running this kernel for long.Just need to get it to boot and to see if graphics performance is as it should be.
