Anyone that can help me with this is awesome. :D

Configuration:
Sparc 5
110Mhz
128Mb RAM
4x CDROM
SunQE

I have downloaded the SPARC iso for 1.1a.... SILO boots it into linux without a problem. I have chroot'd my self to /mnt/root-sparc , fdisk'd and mkfs'd my file systems.

The current problem is that my primary interface is dead (has been since like 1996) so I need to "modprobe sunqe". When I do I get the following error:

"Can't open dependencies: /lib/modules/2.2.20/modules.dep (No such dile or directory)"

I have checked /lib/modules/2.2.20/modules.dep and sure-nuff its not there.

So, how can can I continue the install if I can not download anything?

PS - can't do netboot.. I'm currently stuck in a network with no unix (ick) and not under my controll (big ick)

found the stage 1-3 archives in the chroot.

untarballed stage 3, cp -rp'd the /lib/modules to /mnt/gentoo/lib

chroot /mnt/gentoo bin/bash
depmod -a
modprobe sunqe

bingo :D

Next time someone should depmod -a before building the ISO

Yeah SPARCstation 5 :-)

Its been building stage 2 over 50 hours now... though I did check, and its *90* MHZ not 110.

My co-workers think Im nuts... They're right.

Ahh well, its probably the most reliable machine I have, and I keep hearing Linux is quite a big faster than Slowaris on the same hardware. Time to see.

How well did yours on building Gentoo?

DId you ever get your sparc to install gentoo? I have a 170Mhz sparc 5 and i'm about to try, but i'm afraid it's not going to be stable. I was reading some of the docs and i'm...well... nervous

I must be boring... I have a SparcStation 20 (dual 100MHz, baby!) and I just run Solaris 8.

It's not sexy, but man is it stable!
Code:

% uname -a
SunOS barleywine 5.8 Generic_108528-09 sun4m sparc SUNW,SPARCstation-20
% uptime
10:43pm  up 203 day(s),  5:05,  1 user,  load average: 0.06, 0.03, 0.02

Come to think of it... 203 days is kinda sexy....

Anyway, I love Gentoo for my desktop, and I'm sure it's great for servers, but it's hard to go wrong with something as stable and proven as Solaris.

If you do ever get that up and running, would it be possible to benchmark it? I would like to know if Linux really is faster on these old beasts...

its much faster. There are benchmarks published on the web are mostly for specific applications, such as apache, dns, etc.

its not that Solaris is wrong, its that Linux on older Sparcs is so right :-) I used to run an ancient version of Redhat on an ancient IPC (five years ago).. never had any problems.

As for Linux stability, I have had Sparc Linux boxes with over a year of uptime. I've had x86 Linux boxes with over three years :-)
