We have two Ultra 60s sitting around here in the office doing nothing, so I decided to grab one and install Gentoo Sparc on it. Here's some information about the machine:
Code:

whattodo root # cat /proc/cpuinfo
cpu             : TI UltraSparc II  (BlackBird)
fpu             : UltraSparc II integrated FPU
promlib         : Version 3 Revision 31
prom            : 3.31.0
type            : sun4u
ncpus probed    : 2
ncpus active    : 2
Cpu0Bogo        : 591.46
Cpu0ClkTck      : 0000000011a4e272
Cpu2Bogo        : 591.46
Cpu2ClkTck      : 0000000011a4e272
MMU Type        : Spitfire
State:
CPU0:           online
CPU2:           online

whattodo root # free -m
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:           994         68        925          0         24         19
-/+ buffers/cache:         24        970
Swap:          488          0        488

whattodo root # uname -a
Linux whattodo 2.6.6 #3 SMP Tue Jun 29 00:13:19 GMT 2004 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc II  (BlackBird) GNU/Linux

whattodo root # df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1             473M  102M  347M  23% /
/dev/sda4             3.0G  1.7G  1.2G  59% /usr
/dev/sdb1             1.9G  282M  1.6G  16% /var
/dev/sdb2             2.1G   45M  2.0G   3% /home
none                  498M     0  498M   0% /dev/shm

So what should I do with this machine? And the other one? The other machine has only one processor and half a gig of RAM. Same hard drive situation. I'm open to any and all suggestions, as long as they are things that are normally OK to do on a corporate network. Even if it was just running Setiathome or something, that would be fine. I just hate to see hardware sitting around doing nothing.

these would be idea workstations / demo-boxes to show employees who might be interested what you can do with linux and non x86 hardware, maybe to demonstrate to managment that non x86 is good, etc etc.

you could use one to run nagios :-D

extra shared HD space never hurts either.

maybe a backup server for some network service like DNS or whatnot?
