emerge make: invalid option -- J make: invalid option -- 3

When I try to emerge most packages after the configure completes I get the following errors from make

make: invalid option -- J
make: invalid option -- 3

I am using the latest gentoo sparc on a Sun E250.

Any ideas?

Do you have MAKEOPTS set in /etc/make.conf? Make sure it's not set to -J3 (it should be a lower case j).
