I have enough space to copy the files off so when i start copyig one drive to another its all goin well for a little while then my system halts. it just locks up ... i dunno whats causing it. It never does this doing anything else.
System Specs
dual 2100 MP
512 ram
any ideas would be helpful |

I've had a similar problem when copying large data files or installing software with large files. Especially common with files >250 Mb.
I've usually had this problem with CD data, but I've not tried large hdd transfers.
My machine (K6-III 450MHz -- 184 Mb RAM) locks up regardless of X or console. gentoo or vanilla sources.
Anyone able to help? |

Maybe using hdparm to change DMA settings? Changing or reseating drive cables? Adding support for the Magic SysRq key might allow you to print some debugging information about where in the kernel things are hanging. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Might this be the via chipset large file copy bug?
In one of the kernels offered in portage, there is a patch for the via bug. and a menuoption in make menuconfig
either the mjc ,lolo or ac sources. Check the ebuilds, maybe there's some info. Or else just emerge them and check the make menuconfig.
Nevertheless theres is a patch for this probem, if it actually is the problem.
You could perhaps also google up something with "via file copy kernel patch"
Worth to look into? |

I'll check DMA settings...
Should I disable all DMA to ensure the transfer is (slowly) successful?
In my case it is not a VIA Southbridge issue. I am using a SiS530-based board.
Thanks for the suggestions,
