I use a modem that is always on, and needs no logging in, to access the internet. It is compatible with linux in every way, but I am not sure how to set it up durin the install.
it is NOT the kind of internet that requires logging in. It keeps that information stored in the modem's memory.
how would I make sure gentoo knows that this is the connection? _________________ willst thou flee or fight? willst thou win, or die trying? and in the end, willst though get the girl, or play like one? |

What sort of connection is it? Do you have your would be Gentoo system connected to a router or is the computer directly connected to the Internet? Are you using a static IP address or DHCP? _________________ Robert |

Have you tried the connection? If you don't have to login and you have an ethernet-connection it seems like a no brainer to me. Give your Linux-box an IP-address within the same network-ID as your DSL-modem. Assign the same subnetmask as your DSL-modem to your Linux-box. Set your DSL-modem as default gateway. Add a DNS-server to /etc/resolv.conf.

If your ISP uses PPPoE the install manual for 1.4 has instructions for setting up a PPPoE connection. If not you should just have to use ifconfig to setup the ehternet adapter with the IP address assigned by your ISP I believe. If you are going to be installing 1.2 you can get an ISO with PPPoE support. See this thread for more info on that. _________________ Robert |
