damn, that's a whole bunch of people having the same "neat" problem...

by the way, just another echo:
-gdm login fails -> authenification failed
- X-Server actually runs fine when I'm using that *woarg* default manager, whose name I don't dare to write...
- can't neither emerge nor compile (the genuine tar) Midnight Commander due to some missing pam-references or something like that...

:: everything emerged throughout the recent days

Now I could also mention / confirm that in my point of view pam the problem is... but I guess this shouldnt be questioned anymore...

thank in advanced to that fellow who knows what to do...

ps: ???? appropriate forum ?????

downgrading to r7 didn't help for me... my pop/imap servers aren't working.

neither for me. I suspect libtool though and can't downgrade it because portage doesn't have an old ebuild for it.

Tried r7, no dice. Libtool is a strong candidate due to the recent changes... although I really don't have a clue what this thing does :lol:

Code:

# ChangeLog for sys-devel/libtool
# Copyright 2002 Gentoo Technologies, Inc.; Distributed under the GPL
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/sys-devel/libtool/ChangeLog,v 1.10 2002/10/20 10:46:22 azarah Exp $

*libtool-1.4.2-r2 (20 Oct 2002)

  20 Oct 2002; Martin Schlemmer <azarah@gentoo.org> :

  Spiced up version.

*libtool-1.4.1-r10 (20 Oct 2002)

  20 Oct 2002; Martin Schlemmer <azarah@gentoo.org> :

  Remove the ltmain.sh-hack.patch, as it caused problems with linking
  dependencies.

*libtool-1.4.1-r9 (3 Jul 2002)

  3 Jul 2002; Martin Schlemmer <azarah@gentoo.org> :

  Fix a bug in libtool-1.4.1-portage.patch-v? .. basically just a type o.  Also
  Enhanced it to be able to use $PWORKDIR ($WORKDIR in ebuilds) that the latest
  portage should export.

Downgrading to r7 worked like a charm for me with GDM. Note, however, that is not at all the same as working with pop/imap authentication. All of my mail authentication is being handled by ldap so I can not test that. It is strange though that r8 seemed to allow console logins/ssh fine, but broke gdm. r7 seems to work for gdm (for me anyway) but apparently still breaks pop/imap auth. This does strongly suggest a conflict with something else, rather than a bad package all to itself. I am going to downgrade my libtool (yes i know there is no package for it, but i will create on in my /usr/portage.overlay) and upgrade my pam to r8. I will let you know if this fixes gdm.

My font problem has been covered in another thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=19194

I emerged a fresh copy of fontconfig, copied (and edited) Xftconfig to /etc/X11 and ran fc-cache for my font dirs. See the above thread for more information. For me, this has fixed fonts to be beautiful (AA) in everything except for gnome-terminal where the font looks like crap. Why not gnome-terminal you ask? Beats me. Grrr....

-Mg

Update: Turns out I was just being dumb. I went into the gnome-terminal preferences and forced it to a specific font and now it looks great. Weird that the default would look so bad though.

my humble opinion is that it is a pam configuration problem....
Unfortunately for you guys i don't know how to set it up properly.
I had a similar problem about a month ago when I installed samba. Pam was emerged as a depedency, and then: nufin'. no login in anywhere... reverted to a backup, put -pam in my use, and i haven't had anyprobs since....

There is a temporarily solution at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9389 you can try, but you should understand that trick with LD_PRELOAD is a temporarily hack to make things work for now. Everybody is waiting for the real fix though.

The GDM issue has been resolved by emerging the latest pam libraries:

* sys-libs/pam
Latest version available: 0.75-r9
Latest version installed: 0.75-r9
Homepage: http://www.redhat.com/linux-info/pam/
Description: Pluggable Authentication Modules

To solve my imap/pop problem I had to first unmerge all instances of pam & uw-imap and then reemerge latest versions of them (i.e. pam-0.75-r9)

Now everything seems to work properly:
root # ldd `which imapd`
libpam.so.0 => /lib/libpam.so.0 (0x40025000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4002e000)
libssl.so.0.9.6 => /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.6 (0x40032000)
libcrypto.so.0.9.6 => /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.6 (0x4005f000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4011a000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

Hi all,

I had the exact same problem. I came across the update while doing an "emerge sync" (have yet to try it).

I'm relatively new to Gentoo (installed it this week), and I was wondering if there is either a forum or a webpage where these updates are listed along with the ChangeLogs - and is there any way to query a changelog before I emerge the program? Specificaly, what has changed, what bugs are resolved by this new version, etc. (If this has already been answered somewhere, and I didn't notice, please feel free to redirect me).

Thanks

zyzzyr

So, do we think that emerging r9 fixes this problem better than downgrading to r7? From what I am gathering, upgrading to r9 works for everyone (gdm users and pop/imap auth users)?

If this is the case, I will update my system to r9.

I'm also a innocent victim of this problem.

After I found this thread, I reemerged pam in r9 and gdm as some people said, but not working...
:cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry:
.
Do I have to unmerge before emerge???

I found this at google:
http://lists.samba.org/pipermail/linux-nisplus/1999-August/000187.html

Code:

cp /etc/pam.d/xdm /etc/pam.d/gdm

And that solved it for me.

I don't know a first thing about PAM, so it could have introduced other problemes.

It occured to me at 1.4rc2 with PAM r11
Tried downgrading to r10 as it was reported to fix it in this thread. No luck with that.

Always nice to have google then :)

Hope this helps someone out.
