As I think I stated earlier on in this thread...I got it working and it was pretty impressive. But once you've checked it out that's about all you can do really. It's no where near good enough to run as a desktop environment. It's very buggy, crashes all the time and has limited support for the programs that you can run in it.
I don't think there is an ebuild for it yet and there may not be for some time becuase of the aforementioned problems. If you are really that keen to check it out then it's not that hard to get it running....
Good luck
Cheers, |

Are you on shrooms? They look absolutely nothing alike, are completely different in functionality and follow completely different paridigms. The only similarity is that they're both 3d. _________________ Still using Gentoo, just too busy for forums these days. |

Has anyone had trouble with crashes when trying to start looking glass? I started it once with lg3d-session, it worked; since then, every time I try that my machine crashes *hard*. Just after the nvidia driver loads I get a black screen with flashing pinstripes, and the machine requires reboot. I'm using an nvidia geforce 2 go on a dell inspiron 2650. PS: the lg3d-dev script still works within X. |

I used the lookingglass-bin ebuild to install it and lg3d-dev runs fine under xorg.
When I try to run lg3d-session as root (gdm is killed) I get following errors:

Since they are both 3d, that probably reminds him of Looking Glass.

It looks like X is still running. quit X windows, killall gdm, etc, then try it. I initially created a *.desktop for gdm to use untill i realized that lg3d seems to use a special X server of some sort.
I'm getting a different error however. Anyone seen this one?

GNOME 2.6.
And might I add, a pretty damn good system. AthlonXP 2500+, 1GB DDR400, nVidia GeForceFX 5600 256MB. |
Same situation here. I got a better system than you do (except 512MB less ram) and unless if I do a smooth resize, X struggles to catch up... Hopefully X.org will do something about this in the future? (but then again, this happens in windows too, but i don't think its quite as bad)... if you want a quick solution to this, use window maker. i'm not sure how they do it, but they're window manipulations are down solid.
i use kde because of it's features however. |

According to Looking Glass devs LG3D 5.0 is quite old.
http://www.javadesktop.org/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=7047&tstart=120
Seriously, it's time for portage to get updated again. How does one go about having the ebuild updated for the new version???
I tried out LG3D 6.1 manually and it solved my problem. I think it would make other peoples lives easier as well. |

Actually, Even with the window makers, it's not perfect, it is much better, but meh. I primarily use Gnome because I like GTK _________________ Check out my awesome blog! (The Best Blog Ever)

I would love to use it. We need an updated ebuild in portage that uses the latest version of LG.
I would do it myself, if I knew how! Any pointers would be appreciated. |

However, the latest 0.7.0 build of looking glass needs a bit of tinkering to get it to work.
jdk needs to be version 1.5.0 or better (the 1.5.0.04 ebuild in portage suffices)
Then "Project Looking Glass requires Java 3D 1.4 build4 or later" (I hacked up an overlay ebuild for this)
Now you need to set the java voodoo to find all the bits.
java-config -A jai-bin,sun-java3d-bin
Next tinkering in the <wherever>/lg3d/bin/setup to have it pick up the environment's classpath and not clobber it.
Look for the bits around line 121 in that file:
Code: |
if ( ${?RELEASE} == 0 ) then
setenv CLASSPATH ${lgdir}/build/classes:${lgdir}/src/:${lgdir}/../lg3d-demo-apps/build/classes:${CLASSPATH}
else
setenv CLASSPATH ${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-core.jar:${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-incubator.jar:${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-backgrounds.jar:${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-demo-apps.jar
endif
|
And change it so that the CLASSPATH picks up the enviroment set one as well.
Code: |
if ( ${?RELEASE} == 0 ) then
setenv CLASSPATH ${lgdir}/build/classes:${lgdir}/src/:${lgdir}/../lg3d-demo-apps/build/classes:${CLASSPATH}
else
setenv CLASSPATH ${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-core.jar:${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-incubator.jar:${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-backgrounds.jar:${lgdir}/lib/ext/lg3d-demo-apps.jar:${CLASSPATH}
endif
|
Then you should be able to run ./lg3d-dev & ./lg3d-app from that directory.
lg3d-session does work as well but my machine does a hard lock up on exit.
I'm not that familiar with the portage stuff so I'll let someone more knowledgeable hack this into something thats automated |

When I tried to emerge jdk 1.5 I got messages saying "this will fuck everything up and you won't even be able to downgrade!" so I didn't want to force the issue. |

you can move back to 1.4* after using 1.5. in fact, i believe you can have both installed and just switch between them using a env var. |

They are slotted so you can have both installed at the same time, one lives in /opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.08 and the other lives in /opt/sun-jdk-1.5.0.04
switch between em with java-config -S for the system wide one and java-config -s for the user one.
java-config -L will show what options to feed the above commands. |

Sweet, thanks!
I have Blackdown JDK 1.4.2, if I install Sun JDK 1.5 will I still be able to switch between them or should I swap out my Blackdown for some Sunnage? |
