halo everybody.

problem1 - when rebooting, i get the message error
" Warning: no runlevel defined...use shutdown..."

problem2 - when booting Kernel hangs with this messages
"Cannot open root device "sda2" or 08:02"
"Please append a correct "root=" boot option
"Kernel panic: VFS Unable to mount root fs on 08:02"

Building from a stage3 tar. on a QuickSilver 867, 640MB Ram, Adaptec 29160N SCSI Card with 18GB IBM ULTRA160 and external cdrw.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

For problem 2, what fisesystem is / on? What SCSI options did you include when you made your kernel?

Everything is ok now.
The problem was the Kernel config.
General Setup-> Default Bootloader Kernel Args. -> ".... root=/dev/sda2"

I've change it to my real root partition...

Thank you.

My problem now is "emerge xfree", error messages:
"!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully"
"!!! Funtion src_compile, Line 194, Exitcode 2"
"!!! (no error message"

My comp.: POWERMAC G4 QuickSilver 867

make sure you have latest CFLAGS for your G4 -- there might be a newere make.conf waiting to be updated.

you should have this:

CFLAGS =" -O2 -mcpu=7400 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fsigned-char "

If you don't have this it's the problem (earlier version were missing the mabi=altivec option which is requried for -maltivec)

OK!

Is there any chance for X to work with my nvidia GeForve2 MX?
I've read all the docs but:

'emerge nvidia-glx' and 'emerge nvidia-kernel'
returns:
'all ebuils that could satisfy (both) has been masked'

Trying to set Xfree to use the 'nv' driver returns:
'can't locate driver 'nv' .blabla.. no screens found'

I've enabled '/dev/ agpgart' and 'Apple UniNorth' in the kernel but without success :(

Do I have to change USE options prior to emerge xfree?
Can I, should I change masked packages?
Help!!

Ok for fear of this sounding rude... RTFM for most of those things.

There is a sticky at top of this forum regarding masking. For nvidia NONE of that stuff applies to ppc 9which is why its all masked). nvidia provides binary only drivers for X86 platform and refuses to privde for PPC platform as they don't see it as a viable platform.

Check http://gentoo.org/~gerk/xeasyconf/

there is a bit of nvidia info there. Also the way you changed your kernel configs should be completely un-needed for botting properly, if you had to do that to get things working then you need to properly do you yaboot.conf files (it should be setting root= )
