Did a search, but couldn't figure out how to narrow it down to manageable results. Also scanned the main gentoo site.

What I'd like to see are instructions on how to install programs without emerge. I'm talking more than the basic
instructions that come with most programs. How to control where stuff gets installed... how to remove it... how to
"know" where it put files, that kind of stuff. Installing isn't too bad, understanding whats happening is a little bit
more daunting. Does this already exist?

Also, now that I've installed Gentoo and some basic packages, I'm curious to learn more about the USE settings
(I know where the docs are for that). Once I figure out how I want to manipulate USE, do I have to reinstall Gentoo
to take advantage of that? Obviously the packages would have to be rebuilt. Are reinstalls of this nature particularly
risky?

Thanks.

No, just the packages that will take advantage of the new USE settings.

Thanks... I was thinking the base install might benefit from USE as well. Reading the how-to now :)
