Hello all. I have been fighting with opera for several days now trying to get java working. I am at my wits end here. I have the sun-jdk java installed. It works fine in Mozilla, and konqueror but it refuses to work in opera.

I did the following within opera to try and get it working:
1. Click on File ==> Preferences
2. Click on Multimedia to expand the tree and choose plugins
3. I then click on modify path
4. I add /opt/sun-jdk-1.4.1.01/jre/plugin/i386/ns4/ to the path
5. Java is picked up. It looks weird but it shows in the plugins.
6. I try to go to a page that has java and no applet loads.
7. I open opera in a terminal window to see what if anything is being reported. I get the error listed below.

Code:
/opt/opera/lib/opera/plugins/operamotifwrapper: error while loading shared libraries: libXm.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I have openmotif and sun-jdk installed.
Code:
qpkg -I -v | grep openmotif
x11-libs/openmotif-2.2.2-r1 *

qpkg -I -v | grep java
dev-java/java-config-0.2.6 *
dev-java/sun-jdk-1.4.1.01 *

The netscape-flash plugin, and xpdf plugins work fine in opera. It is just java that refuses to work. I searched the web re libXm.so.2 and it looks like that is part of lesstif. I searched the portage tree for lesstif, and the searches come up blank. Will installing lesstif break openmotif? I can grab the rpm but I really am hoping someone know of another solution. Thanks in advance :)

Well I got it fixed. I removed opera and I installed lesstif. It is playing nice with openmotif (so far anyway), and then I installed opera again. All of my plugins work again.

BTW I found the lessfif source here
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=8596

I've exactly the same problem! I unemerged opera and openmotif. Then I compiled javaplugin (followed the instructions in mozilla 1.1 javaplugin -thread in newbies section) and emerged opera, lesstif and openmotif. Still I've those same weird symbols before Java-plugin text what Megatron had (in preferences-> plugins).

Plugin works great in mozilla & own-compiled phoenix, but not with opera. I've also tried blackdown-jre, but still java no go.

Phoenix is also good, but it has very much problems with javascript. Opera is a great browser, but because of java issues I can't use it much :-(. Any hints?

Problem solved! I'd to edit /usr/bin/opera. I added my java-dir to OPERA_JAVA_DIR and made some symbolic links.
