I have this chip on my motherboard and module in my kernel, so it should work, in theory. I decided to check here if I needed any special daemons, etc. to use this device rather than plunge onward and mess up my system accidentally.

Are there any userspace daemons needed to use this module, or is it completely self-contained? And once it's running, how would I go about testing it?

It depends on what you want to use the chip for. If you want to use the watchdog timer functionality, then I don't have a clue.

But if you want to use the hardware monitoring features of the chip (i.e. fan speed, voltages, and temperatures), then you just have to install a couple of modules and a few user-space tools. The modules should already be in your kernel-tree, if you are running a 2.6.x kernel. If you have already compiled these into your kernel, then all you have to do is to install a program to print the information. One such program is lm-sensors, which can be found at this address: http://secure.netroedge.com/~lm78/docs.html
